Was an assassination attempt against the Pope being prepared in Albania?

Two Italian police officials have been in Tirana and Shkodër The reasons of SHIK Bashkim Gazidede says: “We have been dealing with this matter for a long time.” Before the arrival of John Paul II. TIRANA — Had the conspiracy of the relevant parties had a fully developed plan to be carried out before killing the Pope? This is a version that has involved both countries. That is also the reason why, in recent weeks, two Italian police officials have been seen repeatedly in Tirana and Shkodër. The mission, as Mr. Bashkim Gazidede himself, head of SHIK, has confirmed to us, was linked to the Pope’s arrival in Albania. “A group of Italian police specialists,” Mr. Gazidede declared, “has recently been in our country and together with Albanian experts is examining the possibility of a scenario according to which people coming from Eastern countries would carry out an assassination attempt against the Holy Father.” One of the projects with which they want to kill today and Sunday in Shkodër 15,000 unpaid members of the Islamic-Democratic Imperial Union could pose serious risks for carrying out an attack. According to sources of our newspaper, the persons being examined since two months ago entered Albania, from where it is believed they were infiltrated by pro-Iranian and anti-European extremist elements. This would also explain the frequent movement of Italians in Tirana and Shkodër. According to the above-mentioned sources, precisely while the Italian specialists were verifying the “scenario” in the field, the head of SHIK also addressed the Albanian police structures for a more careful check of the suspected persons. For the same purpose, it has been learned that civilian specialists operating within the Vatican security structures have also come to Albania. Meanwhile, the Italian police has also been alarmed by the information it has received from its services, and its officials have maintained constant contacts with the Albanian authorities, in order to prevent any surprise during the Holy Father’s visit. TIRANA — In order to prevent at all costs any possible terrorist act on the eve of the Pope’s visit, the Italian police has increased cooperation with the Albanian authorities. Sources within this police force state that, because of the regional situation and various threats, John Paul II’s arrival in Albania has been considered an objective requiring a high level of security. “For weeks now, our team has been in uninterrupted contact with the Albanian side,” an Italian source is said to have stated.
