Is the Pelikan mission coming to an end?

DURRËS Because of long-lasting interruptions in electricity supply. The reconstruction of the drinking-water pumping station, as well as the repair of faults, are bringing the city's water supply back to normal. Improvements in conditions at the Port of Durrës, as well as the income secured from commercial activity, are creating better opportunities to cope with the situation. The city commission for housing homeless families has continued work on finding accommodation for them. Unemployment remains a problem, but compared with previous months there appear to be signs of stabilization. Some free-trade outlets and some small private enterprises have partially absorbed this labor force. All these developments were noted during a meeting held at the prefecture of Durrës with representatives of the international “Pelikan” mission, which has helped with food and clothing supplies. The meeting also discussed future expectations and the possibility of reducing this mission's presence in the city. Signs of demobilization; photo of a mission vehicle in Durrës[?]

Aid: 9,000 tons of wheat have disappeared

In the report, Financial Poland accuses 40 people A report by Financial Poland accuses 40 people Finance Minister Genc Ruli says: “Since the wheat can no longer be found, its value ends up in the mice register. Other thefts have occurred” ■ In the year-long effort to find out where 9,000 tons of wheat sent to Albania as aid ended up, a “host” of numerous thieves has now come to light. They also bear responsibility for other thefts of food aid. According to a report drawn up by a Polish financial body, in cooperation with Albanian specialists, the fate of this quantity of wheat is still unclear, but a large part of it appears to have been lost through theft and mismanagement. ■ The report mentions around 40 people suspected of having had responsibility in the distribution and storage chain. They include directors, warehouse managers, transport supervisors, and other local officials. In some cases, the lack of documentation and the mismatch in figures have made it impossible to verify precisely the route followed by the wheat. ■ Finance Minister Genc Ruli, asked about the issue, stated that “since the wheat can no longer be found, its value ends up in the mice register. Other thefts have occurred.” His statement underscores the chaotic state of aid management in the country and fuels calls for a criminal investigation. ■ The operation to distribute food aid at the beginning of the transition was accompanied by a lack of control, weaknesses in transport, and poor storage of goods. The case of the 9,000 tons of wheat is seen as one of the biggest scandals of this period. Wheat distribution operation

now the Prosecutor's Office is also investigating

The announcement of the investigation has sparked varied reactions in public opinion. For some, this is a necessary step toward clarifying the fate of public assets from the previous period; for others, it is a difficult process because of the lack of documents and the many institutional changes in recent years. The Prosecutor's Office is expected to cooperate with financial bodies and property registration institutions to gather the necessary evidence.
