This is how one of the currency traders begins his account; he does not want his name published. He says that yesterday the police intervened harshly, seizing money and fining the exchangers. According to him, around 1.5 million lek were blocked and 21 people were fined. “I do not agree with the way the operation was carried out. We have been working here for a long time; everyone in Tirana knows it,” he says. Another exchanger explains that the currency market was born out of necessity and the lack of official counters. “Today there was no business at all. Everyone got scared,” he says. Meanwhile, police sources state that the operation is part of a crackdown on illegal financial activities and that it will continue in the coming days. Some of the exchangers complain that during the operation substantial sums were taken without a clear official report, while the police reject these accusations. “We are going to complain.
