Kosovo, the serious condition of 23 striking journalists

From Prishtina, the Presidency of the Democratic League speaks TIRANË (GS). - The strike by Albanian journalists from television, radio and the press, who have undertaken a protest action against Serbian repression and terror, is continuing into its seventh week. According to reports to the people of Kosovo from the Bujku news agency and the Youth Forum, citing sources among the journalists’ families, their condition is worsening drastically. “More than hunger, the cold is destroying them,” the statement says. Adem Mirashi — one of the organizers of the strike and also one of the heads of Prishtina Television — said that “since the strike began, the journalists’ condition has been getting worse and worse.” “Most of the strikers have become noticeably weaker, are sleepy, short of breath even at rest, and move with difficulty,” Mr. Mirashi replied in telephone questions put to him yesterday by “Gazeta Shqiptare”. Tonight the situation is becoming worrying because supplies of generators(?), soap, toothpaste, medicine and food have become more difficult. “What they need most is heating,” Mr. Mirashi says. The striking journalists have now entered the seventh week of their hunger strike, thus protesting against Serbian terror in Kosovo. According to reports from Kosovo, the hunger strike has mobilized the entire progressive European public. “Information sur le Kosovo”, “Rinascita”, “Alto Adige”, “Corriere del Ticino”, “Le Monde”, “L’Unità”, “Il Giornale”, etc., and the prestigious television networks “BBC” and “CNN” broadcast daily news reports and programmes about the hunger strike of the 23 Albanian journalists in Kosovo. “The democratic world is being shaken by the news of their difficult condition,” says a statement from the Democratic League of Kosovo. The Presidency of the LDK states that “the health condition of the 23 journalists who are continuing the hunger strike has seriously deteriorated.” The statement says that “according to doctors, some of them have entered the critical stage, having lost more than 15 kilograms in body weight.” It further emphasizes that “they are also losing their ability to see, which makes their situation even more difficult.” The Presidency of the LDK appeals to public opinion in Kosovo and abroad for “further moral and material support” for the striking journalists. It also asks “international humanitarian organizations to do everything possible to save their lives.” In its statement, the LDK stresses that “the Serbs are continuing police and military terror against the Albanian population in Kosovo and are violating elementary human rights.” Përkthim anglisht: Kosovo, serious condition of the 23 striking journalists. “Up” saved it

THE MONUMENT NEAR MOTHER TERESA IN SKANDERBEG SQUARE CANNOT BE REMOVED IN A DAY JON AND REX STHEMËSH(?) SAY IN THIS INTERVIEW — “To be honest, we did not expect to win. We did it simply because the monument seemed foreign to us in that landscape before our eyes. We believed in the values of that historic place, but we still expected that our effort would serve more to draw the authorities’ attention.” This is how the French decorators(?) “Rex” (?) and “Jon” comment on winning the competition for the monument dedicated to Mother Teresa, which has been displayed in an exhibition at the “Palace of Culture”. They are among the 80 artists and architects who submitted their works for the statue dedicated to Mother Teresa. “Gazeta Shqiptare” asked the winners a simple question: “Will the new monument replace the current obelisk?” — “No,” they answer with considerable determination. “We were not prompted by such a relocation. On the contrary, we have always thought that the obelisk near Mother Teresa should remain part of the urban ensemble.” In their view, the new project was not conceived as a destructive intervention, but as a restoration of civic memory. They add that “every new monument should respect the surrounding space, its history and the sensitivity of the public.” Përkthim anglisht: “Up” saved it. The monument near Mother Teresa in Skanderbeg Square cannot be removed in a single day. The winning designers say they did not expect to win and submitted their project mainly to draw attention to the historical and urban value of the site. They insist the existing obelisk should remain and that a new monument must respect the surrounding space and public memory.
