A revolution in Justice

Five points to protect the accused What the new criminal procedure code will mean for people EDMOND LICA TIRANA — In our country, a real revolution in Justice is taking place, completely unknown and untested before. Defense lawyers are taking on a special role in court hearings, with appointments made in the presence of judges. This is only one of the innovations of the new criminal procedure code, which is now coming into force. According to specialists in the field, this code more clearly defines the rights of the accused, the obligations of the procedural authorities, and the way investigations are conducted. One of the most important points is the protection of the citizen during the preliminary investigation stage and in court. The code stipulates that no one may be held without a lawyer in cases provided for by law and that the accused must be informed of the charge. The article emphasizes that there are five fundamental points for defending the accused: the right to a lawyer, the right to be informed of the charge, the right not to incriminate oneself, the right to challenge evidence, and the right to a fair legal process. Justice specialists consider this an important turning point for the Albanian system. [Note: parts of the text are illegible in the image and only the main discernible fragments have been provided.]
