“They asked me to accuse Kadri Hazbiu”
TESTIMONY OF ALI CENAS / It seems that, in the dispute, the prime minister phoned Enver Hoxha
CAMO SHKODRO
TIRANA — Ali Cena, the former head of the video team covering Mehmet Shehu and his death, testifies that he was asked several times about the circumstances in which the prime minister of the time met his death. “On the night of 17 December 1981, Mehmet Shehu died. The next morning, around seven o’clock, I went by a special vehicle up to the hills by the lake where Villa 4 of the Block was located. There the Minister of Internal Affairs, Hekuran Isai, had also arrived. Shortly after I got there, Haxhi Lleshi would also arrive.”
Without at all clarifying the circumstances of Prime Minister Mehmet Shehu’s death, the top bodies of the communist nomenklatura, besides the grand funeral, also publicly denounced him as an “enemy of the Party and a polyagent.”
The former communist prime minister had been considered Enver Hoxha’s most favoured person. “Now he had to be denounced…” the one who cheerfully and firmly described the door to humiliation. Ali Cena, former head of the group of cameramen of Albanian Radio-Television, assigned to the filming team for official ceremonies, is the man who recorded everything on magnetic tape.
He testifies that in an investigative process with numerous repeated questions he found himself under pressure to say things he had not seen. “They asked me to accuse Kadri Hazbiu,” he implies in his file. Because of his professional position, Cena had filmed and been close to many state events related to Shehu.
The former questioners sought details about the relationship between Mehmet Shehu and the top structures of the state, as well as about the movements of the final days. His testimony shows that he saw at close hand the preparations for the funeral ceremonies and the internal contradictions that followed the prime minister’s sensational death.
He further states that on one occasion, after a discussion, the prime minister phoned Enver Hoxha. This part of the testimony is presented as one of the strongest details of the account. According to him, there were also film materials and sound recordings that could shed more light on the circumstances, but not everything was preserved or allowed to be used.
On some 30 pages of tape, according to the newspaper’s presentation, there is another truth about the end of Mehmet Shehu and the efforts to steer the investigation toward an official version. Ali Cena’s testimony casts doubt on the way the political accusation was built after the prime minister’s death.

TIRANA — Ali Cena, an old video technician linked to the filming of official ceremonies, says he was repeatedly questioned about the circumstances of Mehmet Shehu’s death. He suggests that investigators pushed him to say things he had not seen and that they wanted him to accuse Kadri Hazbiu. He also recalls details from the morning after 17 December 1981 and hints that recordings and films existed which could have clarified events.

Waste trafficking from neighboring countries toward Albania
Strict controls on imports
FATOS XHAKU
TIRANA — A new pattern is emerging on the Albanian borders: trucks carrying suspicious materials, industrial waste, and loads that raise concerns about environmental impact. The Environment Committee is calling for urgent action and stronger controls on every import entering the country.
According to initial data, there are suspicions that materials failing to meet standards are being attempted to be brought in from neighboring countries, while customs authorities often do not have sufficient equipment to verify the contents. The issue is also seen with concern because of the long-term consequences for soil and water.
Committee representatives are demanding that procedures for blocking, returning, or destroying illegal shipments be clearly defined. They insist that Albania must not become a host country for foreign waste.
