The Balkans, the heart of both war and peace
They are at the center of world affairs
CALO BOLLINO
TRIANA, (AP, Reu). - The next step will be the meeting of the foreign ministers of the countries of the Islamic Conference (today) to examine Bosnia's request for military intervention against the Serbs.
The latter must make it possible to force Belgrade to open roads for humanitarian aid to Sarajevo and to encourage the Serbs to accept the partition of Bosnia into three ethnic republics, something which, in the opinion of others, could also mean the beginning of the partition of Macedonia. This explanation of the village for the Bosnian request, military intervention to break up Bosnia, was yesterday the subject of discussions at the ministerial meeting of 40 Islamic nations gathered in Istanbul.
The action of the Islamic world not only supports President Alija Izetbegoviç, but it is also an attempt to force the White House to take concrete action. The lack of action by the United States has angered Muslim countries, which fear Serbian domination across the entire Balkans.
Some officials from the Middle East say it is inevitable that the war will spread beyond Bosnia. They speak of danger in Macedonia, Kosovo and Albania. In an interview, Macedonian President Kiro Gligorov declared that peace in Bosnia would be the minimum condition to avoid further explosions in the Balkans.
At the same time, Western powers continue to seek a diplomatic solution. But on the ground, the bombardments, ethnic cleansing and blockade of humanitarian aid continue. The citizens of Sarajevo live amid shelling, hunger and a lack of medicine.
At the Istanbul conference, it was mentioned several times that international inaction is making the war more brutal. Some participants spoke of creating safe corridors and increasing supplies of food and medicine.
The situation remains uncertain and the outlook for peace seems distant, while the Balkans continue to be regarded as the heart of the European crisis of the 1990s.

VICTIMS OF THE DICTATORSHIP
Name | Place | Year
Political prisoners | 3,800 | 1945-86
Killed in prison | 1,500 | 1945-86
Prisoners | 166 | 1951-86
of the Burrel prison | 1951-86
The number of people executed with or without trial up to mid-1948 is 6,364. The total number of deaths in prisons, internment camps and during interrogation is 5,577. The data are disclosed in a new study on the crimes of communism and show the scale of the state terror that struck political opponents, fugitives, clerics, intellectuals and ordinary citizens.
According to the evidence collected, many of those arrested disappeared without leaving a trace. For decades their families received no information about where they had been buried. In many cases the bodies were secretly buried near prisons, military units or in unmarked cemeteries.
At the center of the current investigations are the practices of the State Security, which, after executions or prison deaths, did not return the corpses to the families. Some files are missing, while witnesses claim that burials were carried out at night and under strict surveillance.
Historians and former political persecuted people are calling for the opening of the archives and the identification of burial sites. They stress that without shedding light on the fate of the victims, Albanian society cannot come to terms with the past.
A special commission is expected to verify new testimony in hundreds of cases. Many relatives continue to seek the remains of their loved ones, while the state is accused of acting slowly and without transparency.

It opens in Tirana, closes in Italy
From our newsroom
LECCE - A small scandal has broken out in the region of Puglia over Fitorion-ën, which is gathering in Tirana and closing in Italy. According to union complaints, a large number of Albanian workers have been lured with promises of jobs, but Italian factories are reducing activity.
At the center of the controversy is a company which, according to local reports, will move part of its production to Albania, while hundreds of jobs are at risk in Puglia. The unions consider this a serious paradox in a region struggling with high unemployment.
Business representatives say that the investment in Tirana is intended to expand the market and reduce costs, but does not necessarily mean a complete closure in Italy. However, workers fear that this is only the first step in a much larger relocation.
The issue has opened a political debate, especially over the way companies profit from huge wage differences and the lack of social protection. In Puglia, the opposition accuses the administration of not having intervened in time to protect employment.
Meanwhile, in Tirana the opening of a new industrial activity is presented as a job opportunity for hundreds of families. The contrast between the social crisis in Italy and the need for jobs in Albania makes the issue even more sensitive.
