TIRANA — "The commission specially created for the problem of changing street names is working intensively to restore the names they had before 1944. Four versions have been prepared for the center of Tirana, where the names of many streets and squares will be changed. In the coming days, residents of the capital will also learn the concrete proposals."
This was stated at yesterday's meeting of the Tirana Municipal Council by the mayor of the capital, Albert Brojka. According to him, out of 1,400 names in the capital, about 700 were changed after the war. Of these, 40 percent still retain the names from the period of dictatorship. The special commission has now brought forward for discussion a series of proposals for restoring the historical names.
Several changes have been proposed for the "Dëshmorët e Kombit" Boulevard, while the streets "Myslym Shyri", "Fortuzi", "Bardhok Biba" and others are expected to receive new names. According to Mr. Brojka, final decisions will be taken after consultations with citizens and the relevant institutions.
