Hoxha’s latest deception
CARLO BOLLINO
TIRANA — The memories of an interned person shed light on an inexplicable mystery of the communist regime.
Like something out of a spy film, a sensational episode from Albania’s early years of anti-communist civil war against the communist regime comes to light. The early 1950s were the most difficult period for the communist government, which faced anti-communist rebel forces in part of the country. Inside and outside Albania, hypotheses, rumors and suspicions circulated that Enver Hoxha no longer appeared in public, but was being replaced by a double.
The unusual version comes to light today thanks to the memoirs of a politically interned person, the former teacher Sadik Kaceli [?], who recounts that in the internment camp where he was held, a former senior intelligence official had claimed that Hoxha had a stand-in for certain public occasions.
The article brings back the climate of fear, isolation and absolute secrecy that characterized the regime. The testimonies are presented cautiously, as the account of prisoners and internees, without claiming conclusive proof, but raising the question also found in the title: was a double replacing him in public?
