TIRANA — In Albania the new school year is getting ready to begin, opening its doors on September 14, 2000 in all schools across the country and on September 15, 2000 in some specific districts. According to data from the Ministry of Education and Science, this year 70,000 pupils will sit in school desks for the first time, while another 35,000 will begin first grade under the eight-year system.
The new curricula are expected to introduce some foreign subjects, among them the Russian language[?]. In some schools English, Italian and French will continue to be taught. The Ministry has announced that textbooks and teaching materials have been secured for the normal start of the new school year.
In many districts school buildings are being arranged and repairs are underway. Teachers are preparing for the opening of the new school year, while parents are facing the costs of clothing and school supplies.
There are also expected to be discussions in local bodies about the progress of educational reform, with special attention to schools in rural areas.

TIRANA — Official bulletins have announced new changes in the prosecutor's office structures. According to the decision of the Judicial Council, 14 prosecutors have been removed from office, while 10 others have been appointed to various posts.
The official explanation mentions poor performance, lack of correctness in office and other problems related to the exercise of the function. In some cases the unusual wording "work fluctuations for semi-physical reasons"[?] has been used.

TIRANA — The by-elections in two communes have ended, and according to preliminary results the candidates of the PD and PR have won. The process was accompanied by tensions and mutual accusations between the parties.
In one of the polling stations an incident involving a weapon was also reported, where according to witnesses a pistol was drawn during a verbal clash. However, the authorities said the situation was brought under control and voting continued.
Representatives of the opposition have requested a verification of the process, while local commissioners have described it as generally orderly.

TIRANA — (On page 10) — After an incident during a political meeting, the leader of Legaliteti was lightly wounded in the leg. Police sources said it was an accidental self-inflicted wound with a pistol.
According to witnesses, the weapon discharged while being handled and the bullet struck the lower part of the leg. The injured man received first aid and was then taken for treatment.
The event has sparked comments in political circles, while an official clarification from the party leadership is expected.
