At midnight, the firing squad takes aim
Two condemned men executed in a cemetery
The sentence is carried out for a murderer from Kavaja and one from Durrës
A balance sheet between revenge and justice

TIRANA — (b.c.) Beyond the concern caused by the noise of irritation and fear that has gripped the country, yesterday morning a serious piece of news spread quickly: in Tirana, two men sentenced to death were executed by firing squad. They were the first to suffer the capital punishment after parliament approved its reinstatement.
If the news itself was not at all surprising, but rather quite expected after what has happened in recent months, the way in which the execution was carried out has still been astonishing. No official announcement, no prior statement. Only the relatives were confronted with the accomplished fact. The two condemned men were taken during the night and brought to a cemetery on the outskirts of the capital, where the shooting took place.
According to unofficial sources, those executed were a man convicted of murder from Kavaja and another from Durrës. Both were accused of serious crimes and sentenced by a final court ruling. The only notice circulating yesterday was the one spreading through the corridors of the institutions, with no public declaration.
In public opinion, this news has provoked mixed reactions. Some consider the return of the death penalty a response to rising crime, while others see it as a step backward in relation to the rule of law. Thus, yesterday, along with the news of the execution, the old debate between revenge and justice was reopened.

An asphyxiation against diseases
TIRANA — What seems clear after the issuance of the execution order is that the government has chosen to send a signal of strength. But this signal has not eased public anxiety. On the contrary, it has raised further questions about the manner, the procedure and the message conveyed in a country where order remains fragile.
So far, no official body has given a full explanation. In the absence of institutional transparency, everything remains at the level of partial information and testimonies from relatives.
Another twenty condemned men are waiting...
TIRANA — At present, there are 20 other condemned men awaiting the implementation of the death penalty. These are people sentenced for murder, robbery resulting in death and other serious crimes. If the process begun last night continues, then the country is entering a new phase in which the state is trying to respond with the harshest severity of the law.

The first phase includes only medical care. Payment will be mandatory
TIRANA — A new economic dawn will also be felt in the healthcare system. From 1 January 1994, according to the draft prepared by the government, the start of compulsory health insurance for citizens is foreseen. In the first phase, the scheme will cover only basic medical services, while later it is expected to be extended to other areas.
Payment will be made by employees and employers, according to percentages to be set by law. For social groups without income, the state will assume responsibility for covering contributions. According to specialists, the new model aims to create a special fund for financing healthcare.
However, in the conditions of the deep economic crisis, many citizens view this reform with skepticism, fearing that compulsory payment will further burden family budgets.
Today the National Council of the PD meets over disciplinary charges
TIRANA — At 3 p.m. today, the National Council of the Democratic Party is expected to meet to review a series of organizational and political issues. At the center of the discussions will also be the stance toward several party figures for whom disciplinary measures are being sought.
Sources close to the PD leadership say the debate is expected to be heated, because of the divisions that have emerged within the party in recent months. The meeting is seen as an important test for the cohesion of the main governing force.

The national team, this time the shirts are missing
Three footballers had swapped them with the Danes. The team is in trouble
TIRANA — (ed. t.)
Today Albania and the Czech Republic play at the national stadium “Qemal Stafa” the return match of the “USA '94” World Cup qualifiers. Just as much attention as to the game and the result has also focused on an unusual concern: the lack of the national team’s shirts.
According to reports, after the previous match with Denmark, three Albanian footballers exchanged shirts with the opponents, leaving the team short on kits ahead of today’s game. For a squad with limited material resources, even such a problem becomes a serious headache.
The coach and the officials are trying to find a quick solution so that the national side can take to the field without organizational problems. The match with the Czechs is eagerly awaited by the fans.
