In Fier two agents are hanged After 40 years, the story of a still-mysterious secret mission returns FATOS KLANI The death of the Klabashi cousins A group of partisans of the communist government were preparing the committee "Free Albania" in Paris. In June 1950, the Americans assigned an army veteran to the mission. His team trained on the island of Malta. On the night of 19 November 1950 they parachuted into southeastern Albania. But the mission ended in failure and the two agents were executed. Their story is retold in this account. TIRANA — 8 June 1950. Invited by various Albanian anti-communist groups in exile, CIA agents in Greece began drawing up a plan to infiltrate small groups into Albania. The aim was to organize armed resistance against Enver Hoxha’s regime. British services were also involved in this operation, known to the Americans as “BGFIEND” or “OBOPUS”. One of the key figures in the mission was Hamit Matjani. He trained together with other collaborators and was then sent to Albania. But the network had already been compromised. As soon as they landed, the Sigurimi forces began the pursuit. Some were killed, others captured. According to testimony, two parachuted agents were hanged in Fier as a public example. This episode remained covered by silence and fear for decades. Today, new documents and testimonies from survivors shed light on an operation that aimed to overthrow the communist regime in Albania, but which ended in heavy losses for the organizers and participants. DURRËS / Failed attempt by 17 clandestine migrants SARANDË — Another victim of clandestine emigration was recorded yesterday near the southern border. According to border police, a young man lost his life in the waters near the coast while trying to cross illegally. The body was found after several hours of searching.
