New charges against the PS leader: his request was rejected, he is being held in jail in handcuffs
Lawyer: The corruption trial will begin within October
TIRANA - The court has decided to reject the request of former prime minister Fatos Nano to be released. In yesterday's hearing, which lasted about two hours, his lawyers asked for a change in the detention measure, but the panel of judges turned down the request.
In the courtroom, Nano stated that the corruption charge is politically motivated and that there is not enough evidence. According to the defense, procedures were violated and the investigation was conducted in a one-sided manner.
The prosecution opposed release, saying that the case is in the final phase of the investigation and that there is a risk of influence over witnesses. Nano's lawyer said that the corruption trial is expected to begin within October.
At the end of the hearing, the court upheld the detention measure. Outside the court building, supporters of the Socialist Party were waiting for the outcome of the hearing.
