Canale: “I’m looking for other culprits”

Special interview with the judge investigating the aid coming from Italy Canale: “I’m looking for other culprits” The Italian investigation moves to Albania By Giuliano [?] TIRANA — Ed. (L.a.) — In this scenario, there is still a matter of this kind where it remains to be proven where she had them and for what purpose the accused Frederika [?] asked for this money. After the arrival in Tirana on 4 July 1991 of the Italian investigating prosecutor's office, headed by Judge Claudia [?] Canale, the investigation is taking a new direction. And Albania, which until yesterday had been only a distant and unknown country in the minds of the Italian public, is now becoming a concrete part of a judicial file. At the center of the case are the aid shipments, supplies, deliveries, and the way they were managed. Several Italian institutions are involved in these investigations, as well as people linked to the aid operations. According to the questions being raised, this concerns administrative and criminal responsibility, invoicing, distribution, transport, and relations with the Albanian authorities. A part of the available material shows that explanations have been requested about the movement of goods, the shipment lists, and the destination of the aid. In Albania, the contacts maintained over these months will be verified, as well as the role of the enterprises and state structures. Canale [?] has stated that she will also seek other culprits. She is not limiting the investigation to a single name, but aims to reconstruct the entire chain of responsibility. This means that new testimony and additional documents are expected in the coming days. In Tirana, the judge has met with officials and requested detailed information. The investigation, although Italian, is now entering Albanian territory as a political issue as well, because it is linked to the way the aid was used during the crisis. For Albanian public opinion, this visit and these questions bring a new development: for the first time, Italian justice is seeking concrete responsibility for the aid sent to Albania.
