Foreign lawyer for Nano

TIRANA — Another cry from the Albanian cells. This time it comes from Foto Çami, now imprisoned in Tirana prison, awaiting the trial bench to decide on the charges against him. This is the third interview given to the press by the former secretary for ideology of the PPSH, who, among other things, claims that “by not choosing violence, the country’s then leadership saved Albania from the inevitable catastrophe.” Having been in a cell for 3 years, politically condemned, according to him, Foto Çami rejects in this interview the publication that blamed the old regime for the lack of pluralism in Albania. As for the advice addressed to today’s Albanian political class, the 80-year-old states without any ambiguity that there must be “dialogue.” In addition, Foto Çami also answers the question about the lack of a foreign lawyer.
Former prime minister — Fatos Nano
THE LACK of a lawyer with international experience seems likely to accompany the process initiated against the former ideologue of the communist regime, Foto Çami. The 61-year-old has been charged in case file no. 279/1 with “recruiting citizens on behalf of secret services.” According to him, the investigators asked whether he wanted a foreign lawyer, as happened with former prime minister Fatos Nano. “I have 100 percent confidence in the Albanian justice system, and for that reason I did not think of such a thing,” says Foto Çami.

When asked whether he would have been in favor of strengthening pluralist democracy at the time when he was at the top of the PPSH, Foto Çami replied: “No one can know how history would have unfolded. We lived in specific historical conditions. Nothing can be done with ‘if.’ But one thing I can say with conviction: even though there were crises in the system, the leadership of the time did not choose the path of violence, and this, in the circumstances of that time, saved Albania from inevitable catastrophe.” Asked about his role in the PPSH and the moral responsibilities of that period, he said that he does not feel criminal responsibility, but does not deny that “history will give each one his place.”
Further on, Foto Çami speaks about his nostalgias, about the way he sees the country’s development after the 1990s, and about the need for dialogue between the political parties. “There must be more understanding and less hatred,” he says from his cell.

In Tirana over 100 tankers [?], but without the water [?] it overflows
TIRANA — (A.V.) — 12 central activity points for 12 private fuel stations. According to an order issued by the government, the staffs and no one else, these fuel stations will be specially selected by the National Water and Sewerage Agency, sources from the Ministry of Trade and Energy say — while throughout the country there are currently circulating especially 100-odd tankers, many of them without a license, as well as 40 other “illegal” stations. According to this institution, although there have been improvements in the market these days, it is still necessary for distribution to remain under strict control.
Private diesel sellers in Tirana complain that the quantities assigned to them do not cover the city’s needs. Representatives of traders say that the lines of vehicles at the sales points are caused by panic and the lack of a normal supply network. The Ministry of Trade and Energy has announced that fuel will temporarily be sold only at designated points until the situation normalizes.

«The press is not trusted much»
Berisha approves the law
TIRANA — Spoken of quite a lot in a difficult time for Albanian violence, a brief weeks-long experience with polling showed that the majority of Albanians think the media is still not trustworthy. The news was made known yesterday at a meeting where the results of a public survey on the printed press and television were presented.
According to the data, around 80 percent of those questioned think that newspapers do not tell the truth or tell only part of it. Similarly, trust in television remains low. The authors of the survey emphasized that the politicization of the media, the lack of professional standards and economic dependence are among the main causes of this distrust.
The meeting also discussed the need for a clearer media law and for guaranteeing freedom of expression. Berisha approves the law, it says at the top of the article, referring to the support given to a legislative initiative aimed at better regulating the media market.
Representatives of media organizations called for transparency in newspaper ownership and the enforcement of professional ethics rules. They said that without these elements the public will continue to be skeptical of published news.

SVEMA? SET AND THE WORKSHOP AND
ALBANIA FOR THE ALBANIANS — sensitive intra-
Albanian voices such as that of Mr. Agim Shehu with
his excellent writing “Their Voices” turn to the
state and our conscience to calm the in-
difference toward these fates. These 4 heavy sheets,
in fact contain the dramatic testimony, with
bone-chilling events, of a criminal state
act against innocent people.
Instead of compassion for old people without a path,
orphans without homes and women raped by three
wars (Kosovo, Bosnia, Chameria), our state here
forcibly blocks their bridges of connection with their
homelands through journalism and television. While
human voices are heard in the world offering help
to them, here their doors are closed.
TIRANA — In sculpture there comes to us and goes
away a similar tradition in Albanian poetry. From a
well-known figure that seems to step out of its own
frame, to the poet and writer Mehmet Elezi, a distinctive
voice takes shape. He brings a book that speaks about
the fate of Albanians and about the wounds of our time.
The work rises on a moral and civic tone,
with direct language and dense imagery. At the center
stand human fates, testimonies and shocks that
call for attention. The author tries to turn poetry into
an act of awareness.
On the newspaper covers that publish excerpts
from the book, a spirit of protest is also felt. In
place of silence, the author asks for testimony and
a stance.
