Prosecutors leave for Italy
New evidence is being sought against Nano
ENTERPRISE SCANDAL / Investigations resume with the mission in Rome
Here is why the investigations do not end
TIRANE — a delegation of Albanian prosecutors left for Italy yesterday, in the hope of securing documents and other evidence regarding the activities of former prime minister Fatos Nano, first as minister of Economy and later as prime minister.
Yesterday the deputy general prosecutor, Shkëlqim Hajdari, who heads the delegation with two investigators and two judicial police officers, left for Italy. He is accompanied by two interpreters.
According to sources at the newspaper, the Albanian mission will carry out checks concerning the activities of the company “Albimpex”, which Albanian prosecutors have accused of being part of an illegal transaction scheme. The investigators will seek to question a number of Italian and Albanian citizens linked to contracts, accounts and procedures carried out in Italy.
Fatos Nano remains at the center of attention. According to the prosecution, as minister and later as prime minister he signed or allowed actions that caused economic damage. The mission aims to complete the file with new evidence before the case goes to trial.
Sources close to the investigative group said the requested documents are related to payments, bank transfers and Italian partners of Albanian enterprises. The same sources added that checks in Italy are essential, since part of the transactions were carried out there.
Here is why the investigations do not end:
— some original documents are missing;
— there is a need to take new statements;
— Albanian procedures must be compared with Italian ones;
— some of the actions are alleged to have been carried out on Italian territory.
The prosecution has not announced how long the mission will last. However, according to the same sources, the delegation’s return is expected to be accompanied by a special report on the progress of the investigation.

TIRANE — the “Arsidi” case is becoming increasingly tangled, even though before the file was sent for review it had already generated a considerable number of judicial actions. Only the first defendant in this case, Fatmir Kopliku,
received yesterday Decision No. 5 of the Tirana District Court, by which the case was sent back for retrial before the criminal panel of the same court.
The lack of quorum at the hearing of 5 July this year was noted by the court chaired by Ibrahim Lleshi. Only after two months, in mid-September, it became known that the “Arsidi” case had been dismissed because no judge had come from the court of first instance, while two others had resigned. Later, after a meeting at the Ministry of Justice, the “Arsidi” case resumed.
The decision issued yesterday states that “the criminal panel of the Tirana District Court submits to the president of this court that a date be set for the retrial of the case in accordance with the law”.

Initial data for the first five months of '93
TIRANE — crime is proving significantly dispersed in the first months of this year. According to preliminary police data, the number of murders in the capital has decreased compared with the same period last year.
