Former minister before the judges
De Michelis is heard for half an hour
The scandal of the enterprises; mission to Rome of the Albanian judge
ROME - Questioned at nine o'clock, from 9:58 last Friday, the former Italian Foreign Minister, Gianni De Michelis, appeared before two Albanian judges who had come expressly from Tirana to investigate the scandal of foreign firms that were set up in Albania. According to what can be seen from the press report, the former minister appeared when it was already past 10, but in any case this is a secondary issue. This is the first time for the Albanian government, which has sent two senior-level judges to question a former foreign minister in another country. De Michelis, in a sketched copy of the lawyer's office [...] to whom he had turned, stated that through his collaborators and with his signature, the Albanian government had authorized a special mission in Italy to examine the Albanian state's relations with several Italian companies. He said that the matter had been handled in a regular manner and that there had been no favoritism. Prosecutor Çevri? questioned him for about an hour. According to the first published information, De Michelis clarified his role in the creation of several joint ventures and his relations with representatives of the Albanian side. The Albanian judge who came to Rome is also investigating the activities of several other Italian officials. At the end of the hearing it was said that the investigations would continue and that further documents from Albania are expected.
