The first phase of responses is over. The court has heard the defendants. Everyone insists on their innocence. TRIAL The bloc men surrender the tribune The court also works on Sunday. The last word is given by Leka Çuko and the ring, hunchback, house under accusation. Those brought in for retrial absolve themselves and the others in the conspiracy. A strange obstacle for journalists in the courtroom Better a chronicle or suicide? TIRANË — The trial of the former members of the Political Bureau does not even stop on Sunday. Yesterday morning the response phase of the defendants came to an end, and today the most important part of the proceedings may apparently begin. In addition to the defendants, prosecutors and lawyers, there are also many journalists in the courtroom. But not all of them find it easy to do their work. A strange obstacle has been created for journalists in the courtroom. CARLO BOLLINO Better a chronicle or suicide? Kosovars who take police hostages, Albanians who climb onto rooftops and threaten suicide—these are the images of a society that still lives in tension. In the courtroom, attention is focused on the defendants’ final statements. EDMOND JAKAJ TIRANË — Another session of the trial against the former bloc leaders. Yesterday Leka Çuko’s final statement was also heard. He denied the charges and rejected most of the prosecution’s claims. The other defendants also insisted on their innocence. The hearing took place in a tense atmosphere, but without major incidents. The court seems determined to move the proceedings forward at a fast pace. Relatives, journalists, representatives of institutions and foreigners interested in the progress of this retrial were present in the courtroom. According to the lawyers, many of the accusations are not supported by direct evidence. The prosecution, meanwhile, maintains that the political decisions of the period constitute criminal responsibility when they have produced concrete consequences. The trial continues.
