The new scholarships were approved
The government meets the demands. There will also be no increase in students for the five-year system for another three years. Other conditions are being discussed
ARMAND MERKO
TIRANA — The Albanian government decided yesterday to meet most of the students' demands. In a meeting held yesterday afternoon with the chairman of the strike steering committee, the government announced that it was abandoning the five-year higher-education system and that scholarships would be increased. The chairman of the strike steering committee, Orgests [?] Pasho, told us that the government has pledged to immediately satisfy some of the students' demands. Thus, students who belonged to the four-year system will continue in that system. The five-year system will no longer be mandatory. Students have asked that only those who want it benefit from this system. It was also decided that students' scholarships will be increased. According to the students, the scholarship will be 2,000 lek a month for those studying in the cities where they live and 2,400 lek for those studying elsewhere. For students of the Agricultural University of Tirana, who are accommodated in dormitories, the scholarship will be 2,500 lek. Students will no longer have to pay for electricity and transportation. Meanwhile, there are still unresolved problems, such as the payment for dormitories, where students pay 470 lek a month. According to the students, the finance minister has pledged to solve this problem as well. After the meeting yesterday, the students decided to end the hunger strike. They called this a victory for them, though not a complete one. The chairman of the strike steering committee, Pasho, told us that some of the demands would be met immediately while others would continue to be discussed. Students are demanding that dormitory conditions be improved, especially hot water and furnishings. They have also asked that transportation and electricity charges be abolished and that for three years there be no forced transfer to the five-year system.
