Transferred to another prison The confidential decision was carried out on Wednesday morning EDMOND LAÇI TIRANA — Nexhmije Hoxha is leaving Tirana Prison. Having spent almost two years in one of the cells on the second floor of Tirana Prison—she was arrested in January 1991—Hoxha’s widow traveled to Tepelenë the day before yesterday, accompanied by a special Police escort, which was to carry out a highly confidential assignment. The authorities have therefore decided that the remainder of her sentence, with almost nine years still to serve, will be served at Bënça Prison in Tepelenë, located in a village about 40 kilometers from the town. Bënça Prison is a high-security prison, but not specifically for women, as it serves all categories of prisoners. The request to transfer Hoxha’s widow had been made a long time ago; indeed, she was the first to ask for such a move. In mid-June this year, while awaiting the Court of Cassation’s decision after being sentenced to 11 years’ imprisonment by the Court of Appeal, Hoxha’s widow had asked the Ministry of Public Order to remove her from the conditions of isolation. Her reaction to this transfer is not yet known, because her wish—as also written in this letter—was to go to Gravi Prison, located on the outskirts of the capital. The Court of Cassation’s decision upholding her 11-year prison sentence was the final one that would determine the definitive measure of Albanian Justice against her. Only after this did Hoxha’s widow leave the isolation conditions of Tirana Prison, being transferred to Tepelenë. Although she was held in isolation, the largest room among the ten women’s cells in Tirana Prison had been reserved for Hoxha’s widow. For almost two years, Hoxha’s widow slept on a thin cotton mattress placed directly on the wooden floor, to which she often added a blanket. The Prison staff had also allowed her a rubber item, a thermos and other personal-use belongings. The trial concerning the former Communist leaders resumes today at the Tirana Court. This is the second three-day round of judicial inquiry, following the first, held during the final three days of last week. But the trial has now reached another important point: after each of the ten defendants charged with “violating the equality of citizens in collaboration, through the creation of privileges” has given an explanation, the court is expected to give the floor to witnesses today. So far, 62 witnesses have been scheduled, and their number may increase if a request is made as the judicial inquiry proceeds. Among the best-known witnesses, according to the list of names submitted by the court, are Xhelil Gjoni, Niko Gjyzzari and Abdyl Backa, all of whom held various party and state positions during the Communist regime. Because the investigation and court proceedings are being conducted confidentially, it is not yet known what questions these witnesses will have to answer. But in this trial—as in the case against Nexhmije Hoxha—many of the managers and staff of the Guest House have again been summoned. Since 1953, it had catered to the demands of the red elite. Witnesses will also include relatives of Gegprifti, Bektashi, Çelik, Çami, Mihali, Asllani and Cuko, who, according to the indictment, may testify about the sums withdrawn from Albanian embassies abroad. They were then sold—in small quantities—on the Albanian market, while the rest went to waste and rotted. ‘We absolutely must increase the area planted with this type of tree,’ Vesho continued; ‘fir trees now cover only 3 percent of the forest area.’ Another reason for this radical decision is the inability of the Forest Police and other authorities to control logging, as well as the lack of experience in properly managing forests…

TIRANA — (p. re). Police arrested two people in Tirana who were trading in forged passports. The detainees—Bujar Laza, 27, and Dhori Çani, 43—are both residents of Tirana. Further investigations into Laza and Çani are under way. Their case file has already been forwarded to the Tirana District Prosecutor’s Office. The Police also suspects that an organized group of smugglers is involved in forging passports, which have now become a source of profit. There have been many cases in which inspection authorities at various border crossings have caught people with passports in which only the photograph had been changed.

DEPUTY MINISTER CHANGED AT THE MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE — Myslym Osmani will be the new Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food. Osmani, who replaces Llazar Koran in this position, previously worked as a lecturer at the Agricultural University. Kora has been appointed Director of the Agricultural Programming Office at this Ministry. A NEW NEWSPAPER PUBLISHED IN DURRËS — The new newspaper launched in Durrës is devoted to sports. It is titled “Tribuna Sportive”. In its first issue, the editors dedicate it to the footballers of this city’s “Teuta” team, which has now been crowned autumn champion. “Tribuna Sportive” will be a weekly newspaper. FURTHER COOPERATION BETWEEN ALBANIA AND HUNGARY IN THE MILITARY FIELD — The continuation of was reaffirmed at a meeting between Safet Zhulali, Minister of Defense, and Peter Dobo, a Hungarian army general. Dobo, who arrived at the head of a military delegation, emphasized that the specialized training of several Albanian military doctors and lawyers in Hungary is part of the detailed cooperation program. AN EVENING IN KORÇË ORGANIZED ON THE OCCASION OF ROMANIA’S NATIONAL HOLIDAY — An event was organized in Korçë by the Korçë-Bucharest-Constanța Friendship Association and the Aromanian Association to mark Romania’s National Holiday. The meeting discussed the significance of this event for the Romanian people, and the Romanian language, literature and culture. On this occasion, the Romanian Ambassador to Albania hosted a dinner.

“People will become more conscious of peace” TIRANA — (p. re). For the first time in a long while, the deployment of Albanian military troops beyond the country’s borders has been proposed. Albanian President Berisha himself, at a meeting with General Link—a director at the U.S. European Command—expressed Albania’s wish to participate in UN peacekeeping missions with a small military unit. According to Berisha, such an action has moral value, making people and countries, as he put it, more conscious of peace. Berisha also praised the Partnership for Peace mission as a dignified transition for Albania toward NATO membership. A few days earlier, he had reacted to the closing of NATO’s doors to Albania and other Eastern European countries, describing the hesitation to admit them as unhelpful. It was the U.S. Secretary of State himself, Warren Christopher, who had deemed the prospect of expanding NATO to include new members from Eastern and Central Europe impractical for the time being. The Albanian President thus expressed his conviction that a more concrete and advanced form of cooperation, such as sending troops on peacekeeping missions, would also help dispel these hesitations. A second instance occurred on the eve of the end of the Second World War, when some units of the Albanian Army conducted military operations in the territory of the former Yugoslavia against the German Nazis.
