Only candle flames for the kiosks

“Use of electricity is banned in the afternoon” EMERGENCY Order from the prefect of Tirana. Police patrols are checking compliance. Greece, Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey offer electricity to Albania TIRANA — Electric light has been declared forbidden for the kiosks in the capital and for other recently built premises. Such an order has been issued by the Prefecture; police microbuses have begun “patrolling,” leaving behind traces, while many have replaced the light with candles or gas lamps. They have received orders and cannot allow lighting in kiosks and restaurants even after 4:00 p.m. If it is found that this newly announced rule is being violated, they risk being fined. This concerns shops that sell food too, but even there, only one lamp must be used. In this way, traders and service providers in the capital are expected to contribute to easing the energy crisis created by the prolonged drought, which has “forgiven” its own light. And they are not few, but around 3,000 kiosks, many of them bars — which have clearly contributed to the rise in electricity consumption in recent times. Meanwhile, along with a slight increase in the level of reserves in the hydroelectric plants after recent rainfall, the international energy market is more optimistic. In addition to Greece, which has begun supplying energy to Albania — and will even return to Albania the 40 million kilowatt-hours deposited in its grid years ago — Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey have also shown the same willingness. “Those responsible for the 1991-’92 unrest must be punished”

TIRANA — Accounts of the difficult winter of 1991-1992 have returned to Parliament. On behalf of a special parliamentary committee that had investigated for a long time the causes of the tragedies that occurred in several districts of the country, chairman Sadin Balla has reported. “The events of those days were deliberately organized by certain individuals, who must now answer before the law,” was the essence of Balla’s report to his parliamentary colleagues. Balla also said that, based on the information he managed to gather with the help of the committee members led by him, the Prosecutor’s Office will be asked to bring criminal proceedings against the individuals whom he considers the main perpetrators and instigators of the events that had tragic consequences. “In the last months of 1991 — one of the hardest years for Albania in recent times — and in the first months of 1992, crowds of people, driven by extreme poverty, had attacked state warehouses across the country, looting and destroying food goods stored there for a long time, at a time when the market was completely empty. During these events, episodes such as the one in Rrëshen were also recorded, where in its warehouses thousands of tons and ten thousand sacks of pasta were burned. Monstrous events later resulted, tragically, in killings such as that of a murdered policeman, and another person burned alive. Dozens of people were injured. In Tirana, at the end of 1991 — and in the first months of 1992 — state warehouses were also attacked, looted and burned...” Sadin Balla

The capital: a New Year without colors?

Decoration in trouble TIRANA — The capital risks being left without the traditional decorations on the eve of Christmas and New Year. The lack of electricity has hindered the work of preparing the festive decorations. “The Council thought that this year we should do something more truly special?” says the director of the city’s Decoration Enterprise. Under these conditions, simpler forms of decoration are being considered, but not with the same effect as in previous years. (a. m.)

Majority and opposition toast together

VERSE REALITY TIRANA — At last the majority and the opposition have sat down to celebrate. The climate is calm on the eve of Christmas and New Year. Together they have raised their glasses, wished each other well and smiled before the cameras. These are moments that in Albanian political life seem rare. They met around the same table in the Presidency of the Assembly and their attention is on a gentle transition of the year that is passing and on a hope for dialogue. Deputies from both the governing majority and the opposition have set aside, for a few hours, their harsh debate and shared a toast. The author suggests that this is a symbolic gesture, not necessarily a sign of deep reconciliation. Nevertheless, in the atmosphere of the end of the year, symbolism too has its own weight.
