The city is ‘lit up’ by the gigantic fire

SHKODER / A fuel depot burns SHKODER — Once again there is news about fuel in the North, this time not because of its illegal trafficking, but because of the damage that can be caused by failing to follow the rules when handling it. SHKODER — Once again there is news about fuel in the North, but this time not because of its illegal trafficking, rather because of the damage that can be caused by failing to follow the rules when working with it. A spectacular fire caused damage of 100,000 dollars at a fuel supply point only three kilometres from the city of Shkodër. The flames created a frightening spectacle that could be seen several kilometres away from the fire source. According to the information available so far, carelessness caused a short circuit while the fuel tanker, carrying 35,000 litres of fuel in its belly, was being pumped. The fight against the fierce fire lasted for many hours. Three fire engines sent urgently from Shkodër and their crews, despite great efforts, were unable to tame the fury of the flames. The fire did its work until the supply point and the tanker were reduced to a worthless heap of ashes. The firefighters then worked until late at night to clean the affected area. The damage caused is very large: according to the official press agency, the firm "Beshanaku", which owns and sells this point, lost around 100,000 litres of fuel in this incident, corresponding to a sum of approximately 100,000 dollars. The firefighters reacted strongly. Their commander immediately declared: "The unloading of the tanker was being done at a time categorically forbidden for carrying out such operations, because of the high temperatures." The firefighters made it known that if by 5 August the rules of fire safety are not observed at the other points, then strict measures will follow. Some will even be forced to see their station shut down. Shkodra

Villagers set up barricades in the road

Incident near Gjirokastër Police intervention Incident near Gjirokastër Villagers set up barricades in the road Police intervention GJIROKASTER — The detention by the security forces of a 35-year-old man from the village of Lazarat in Gjirokastër risked triggering a dangerous confrontation. On Sunday evening, while the citizens of Gjirokastër were continuing their traditional stroll along the lane near the Gjirokastër police station, a large police force had gathered. The reason was the blocking of the national road, exactly about 2 kilometres from the city, at a place called Kordho. The “barricade” made of stones, trees or even parts of old cars, according to the authors — villagers from Lazarat — was meant as a sign of disagreement with the law-enforcement authorities, who had "arrested their fellow villager without justification". To secure his release, the Prefect of Gjirokastër and the highest local authorities were forced to intervene to calm the villagers and reopen the blocked road. Later, around 20:30 — through an operation by the security forces — the road was reopened, thus preventing a dangerous confrontation. According to the law-enforcement authorities, the 35-year-old from Lazarat had been detained because he had "not respected the figure of the guardian of public order". Although the situation later normalised, on Sunday morning — a day after the incident — large police forces as well as rapid intervention units were seen near the Gjirokastër police station. (R. Ko.)

The homes of 9 families are destroyed

KUKES — One entire floor destroyed, nine other apartments rendered uninhabitable: this is the toll of a serious fire that suddenly broke out on Friday morning in a building in the town of Kukës. Fortunately, there are no reports of casualties. The fire was marked by the absence of a fire engine, which that day was out of service. All the affected families are now being housed in one of the city’s secondary-school dormitories.

Two more victims from car accidents

Drivers are stopped FUSHE-KRUJE — The increase in road traffic during the hot summer period has been accompanied by news of accidents that have occurred on the most heavily used roads. In just a few days, two fatal accidents occurred on the roads linking Fushë-Krujë with Laç and Durrës. In the first case, a fatal puncture in the rear tyre of a car with Shkodër licence plates caused the death of an 11-year-old child and the serious injury of his father. On the road leading to Durrës, a Lancia car collided with a truck, causing the death of an elderly pedestrian. In both cases the police detained the drivers involved in these accidents, and investigations are continuing to determine each person’s responsibility.

A quarrel among Albanians leaves one dead in Genoa

Clandestine migrants are repatriated GENOA — One dead, one injured and one arrested is the toll of a quarrel between around ten Albanians that took place in northern Italy. Harrilla Shena, 29, was stabbed to death. Artan Petani, 23, was wounded in the shoulder and leg, also by knife blows. On the other hand, Mizi Vela, 24, was caught and arrested; he had tried to avenge Shena’s killing by attacking several opponents armed with an iron bar. The two groups of Albanians quarrelled in De Ferrari square at the end of a violent argument. After being stabbed in the abdomen, Shena was taken to Galliera hospital but, despite undergoing delicate surgery, he died. Police officers intervened at the scene of the quarrel and have now begun the initial clarifications and investigations to identify all those responsible for the brawl. Meanwhile, the odyssey of clandestine emigration continues in southern Italy — and especially in Puglia. In Monopoli, forty kilometres from Bari, eight Albanian clandestine migrants, including one woman, were blocked by naval officers from the port captaincy. Another group of 10 people was found near a beach on the Puglian coast, between the localities of "Pantano" and "Cala Corvi", north of the city. While awaiting repatriation, the clandestine migrants told the police that they had departed from the port of Vlorë.

Durrës beach is cleaner

Great participation in the initiative of «Gazetës Shqiptare» and «Soros» A test of civility from young Albanians Great participation in the initiative of «Gazetës Shqiptare» and «Soros» Durrës beach is cleaner A test of civility from young Albanians DURAZZO — A working morning under the sun amid sweat and fatigue, but in the end it was a satisfaction that they managed to complete it. So, amid a gasp, applause, and a few songs, "Clean and safe beaches" came to an end, an event organised by the "Soros" Foundation and by "Gazeta Shqiptare". About 50 young environmentalists from the "Perla" association took part. Young ecologists, as well as volunteers from Tirana and Durrës, cleaned a section of the beach with shovels and rakes. Tomorrow their opinions will be published in the newspaper. The main objective of the event was to raise public awareness on two important themes: keeping the beach clean and protecting it from the shameful presence of cars that endanger the lives of beachgoers and those out sunbathing. An uncivilised attitude to which young Albanians "responded with a high example of education". Alarming pollution at sea VLORE — Pollution of the waters of the Bay of Vlorë has increased alarmingly. "The percentage of hydrocarbons from the waste discharged by Albanian and foreign ships has risen to a dangerous level. The polyvinyl chloride waters, which for 100 decades have also discharged a thermal zone where in this sector the river is seen with mercury monitoring, an extremely dangerous substance." These data came from specialists in water pollution. Pollution — as a result of the deviation — has caused considerable damage to its structure and the disruption of trophic production balances. YESTERDAY IN ALBANIA

KORÇE, STATE CONTROL INSPECTORATE REPORTS SERIOUS VIOLATIONS AT THE SUGAR PLANT — The name of the former director of the Sugar Plant, Petraq Mango-Leci, will end up before the prosecutorial authorities of Korçë. Numerous irregularities — especially regarding cooperation with the Greek company "Dyrmyle Co" — have brought him under investigation. Many causes of responsibility have been uncovered after a long inspection of the plant’s documentation. These include fictitious prices, payment slips for customs clearance, and the purchase of tax evasion, which — according to the report of the State Control Commission — have damaged the interests of the enterprise and the state budget. ELBASAN, AIDS DOES NOT EXIST BUT IT IS PERMANENTLY EXCLUDED FOR 24 BLOOD DONORS — More than twenty-four regular blood donors out of 48 blood donors. After the analyses — especially when positive AIDS-serology cases were verified — 8 percent of blood donors were found to have severe hepatitis. Meanwhile, this measure has also been accompanied by analyses for persons who have returned from abroad, but especially for whom the disease of AIDS is not yet certain.
