The Greek merchant mystery: two killers arrested

“We killed him for our money” Wanted by the Albanian police TIRANE — The mystery of the murder — in the Albanian capital — of the Greek businessman Qiriakos Vudhis has finally been solved. And once again it is the Albanian investigators from Tirana Police Station 2 who shed light on a crime that, for many days, had become international news, even drawing the interest of Interpol. Jorgjica and Frenik Morina have ended up in Tirana Prison — after an expensive 2,000-dollar journey through the roads of Italy and Germany — and are now accused of the intentional killing of the Greek Vudhis. Unable to continue their journey in Western countries — always under the watch of the Albanian police — they perhaps returned to Albania, where they were immediately identified and detained by the authorities. “Everything is now certain — say sources at Police Station 2 in the capital — especially since Jorgjica Morina herself admits the crime committed in her home against businessman Vudhis.” The clarification of the mysterious murder actually began on the morning of 2 June, when a body hit by two bullets was found abandoned in a street in the Albanian capital. Just 150 hours were enough for the investigators to establish that the Greek Qiriakos Vudhis was no longer an unidentified person. In other words, he was a Greek businessman — who had come from Canada and worked as a lawyer — but who was temporarily living in Albania. But identifying the victim also “required” identifying the perpetrators. It was precisely a repainted section of wall that caught the attention of the specialists at Police Station 2, who immediately found there 12 bullet fragments with which businessman Vudhis had been killed. Nikos Morina — Jorgjica’s father — was immediately detained; he was initially suspected of knowing about the crime committed by his daughter and the man she lived with, the other Greek citizen, Sotiris Apostolis. But a then-reported — still unconfirmed — notice that Apostolis, after taking part in the Tirana crime, had taken his own life at a station in southern Greece, and the identification of Jorgjica and Ferenik Morina abroad, temporarily weakened the chances for the Albanian investigators to detain the real perpetrators. As of Saturday around 2 p.m., everything has been reconstructed, because — faced with indisputable facts — Jorgjica was forced to tell everything about the night of the crime and the motives. It concerns about $600,000 that, according to her, the victim Vudhis had long been supposed to return. Meanwhile, other people in Tirana claim that businessman Vudhis, shortly before he was killed, had also taken about another $100,000 from them. A much more complicated story ends with one victim, perhaps one suicide, and two arrests. But until yesterday it had been nothing but a mystery. (e.l.) Tirana Prison

Alia’s lawyer: “We will appeal that decision”

After the 9-year prison sentence Alia’s lawyer: “We will appeal that decision” TIRANE — “The decision was unfounded. A few moments after the Tirana court ruling — which found the former President Alia guilty and sentenced him to 9 years in prison — his lawyer, Kleanthi Koçi, said he would appeal that decision all the way to the highest courts. Thus ends, with a 9-year prison sentence for an amount of nearly 10,000 dollars (at the current exchange rate) — at least up to the Court of Appeal — the former president Alia’s ordeal with the Albanian justice system. Since the eye of 12 September 1992 and imprisoned since 19 August of the following year, Alia still had the chance during the 43 days of his trial to “prove” himself innocent and not be believed by the judges. Along with him, Rita Marko and Simon Stefani — sentenced to 8 years in prison each — Hekuran Isai (5), Aranit Çe[?]la (7), Zylyftar Ramizi (6), Ramiz Alia (9) and Veiz Haderi (6) were returned to Tirana Prison. Only Manush Myftiu and Adil Çarçani were sent home, for whom the judge preferred — because of their serious health condition — house confinement and a 5-year suspended prison sentence. Thus closes the cycle of trials for the regime’s highest-ranking former officials, those who for four decades had sustained perhaps the most dictatorial regime in Eastern Europe. First the Hoxha family, then the first ten “bllokmenë” and now ten more; it seems that the Albanians have finally been brought before the dock of their communist leaders. Even more so because the dictator Hoxha, Mehmet Shehu, Beqir Balluku and many other well-known figures of that regime have also been indicted. (p. re)

The lawyer drowns himself in a reservoir

Tragic event in Tepelenë TEPELENE — All it took was a handkerchief and two lines of writing left as a farewell to life and to his loved ones. “Don’t cry for me, mother, don’t look for me. I know my own trouble.” These are the last words of S. L., a 45-year-old lawyer from Allkomeraj in Tepelenë, who took his own life a few days ago. He went to the shore of the local reservoir and then threw himself into the water, never to come out again. Another tragic figure is thus added to the number of people who, in recent times, in the south of the country, have killed themselves. Only in Sarandë, Gjirokastër and Përmet, according to registered cases, the figures for these victims of stress and hard life are rising... They are all young people and intellectuals — it was written on the 20th. The latest case is that of a 23-year-old from Përmet who was found hanged from the branch of an oak tree. (R. K.)

After the “axe fashion,” planting begins

Fier, forests revived FIER — The forests are now beginning to feel safer. After a period of several years — when around 3,300 hectares of forest in the Fier area came under attack from various pests — measures were taken not only to prevent further damage but also to eliminate the harm already caused. The work of planting new seedlings in Lisit and Kopshtit has been particularly fruitful. Most of these newly planted seedlings are in good condition. In addition, in several areas the growth of vegetation planted at the beginning of the year has been shifted. To compensate for the losses in the damaged areas — they must be equipped with the necessary tools and forest inspectors so as to increase the effectiveness of their work.

For the first time, a wind-powered “mill” to draw water in Lezhë

For the first time A wind-powered “mill” to draw water in Lezhë LEZHE — The first wind-powered “mill” in Albania has just been inaugurated. Built 3 kilometers from the city of Lezhë — in the village of Grykë Manati — it will harness wind energy to bring underground water to the surface and use it for irrigation. The project for this facility was carried out by the Institute of Mechanical Design Studies and implemented by the “Dinamo” factory. Construction of the plant cost 40,000 lekë. It has a capacity of 50 liters of water per minute, which will be used for irrigation and for drinking by 50 families in the village. The plant is designed to operate at a slope of 12.2 meters per second. The area where it is installed is constantly swept by winds with a speed of 34 meters per second.

The “war” on ugly kiosks

DURRES — Durrës kiosks have been “soaking in water.” The city municipality is now thinking of declaring “war” on the ugly shacks and not renewing operating permits for 20 of them. The reasons for this decision were the unattractive appearance of the kiosks, built mostly 3 years ago, as well as the failure to comply with hygiene and sanitary conditions in these premises. The measures taken by the municipality are expected not only to stop the “occupation” of kiosk areas but also to improve the exterior appearance of the buildings that may be constructed in the future.

Air catastrophe in a storm

A DC9 runs off the runway during landing Mistakes the maneuver: 22 dead, 33 survive CHARLOTTE (USA) — The attempt to land the plane during a storm cost the lives of 22 people at Charlotte airport in North Carolina. A DC-9 aircraft of USAir, carrying 50 passengers and 5 crew members, skidded off the runway and caught fire. Some of the 33 people who came out alive from the incident are in serious condition. Fourteen people, said an FAA spokeswoman, had to explain to aviation officials that the plane was about to touch down when the pilot decided to go around again and, in this maneuver, crashed into the median strip. For this reason, the DC-9 that took off from the airport fell, crashed into a phone house and, as it touched the ground, broke into three parts. One part of the tail ended up in a house, but the walls withstood the impact. The plane had come from Columbia, South Carolina. Judges in 98 places set free. Heavy work was beginning to search for them, to go and [mark?] American independence, with only a few final groups still not yet departed. Philip Robinson, a Protestant man from Charlotte, was waiting by car in front of the airport. He was sitting at an exit area. It was very dark, Robinson said — and he could only see a control light, only in the lightning flashes. The plane fell just 200 meters from me. A second later a person in white clothes came out of the flames and headed toward a boy asking for help. In the photo: the wreckage of the plane that crashed in the USA
