“Treason by Omonia”

The investigation into the arrested minority activists is nearing completion Serious charge against five leaders The investigation into the arrested minority activists is nearing completion “Treason by Omonia” Serious charge against five leaders TIRANA — The file on the five main Omonia figures, in which new leads have emerged over the past two months, is now almost complete and will soon be sent to the Tirana Court. Although — because of the secrecy of the investigation and officially no details have been communicated about the case — there is a strong possibility that the five arrested Omonia members will ultimately appear in the dock on charges of “treason against the Fatherland.” They are Irakli Simro, Panajot Llazo, Theodhori Bezhani, Vangjel Papakristo and Kosta Gjiroka, the people now facing the accusation of committing the gravest crime any Albanian citizen — regardless of nationality — can commit, a crime for which the Penal Code even allows the death penalty. With the file being sent to court in these days, the hypothesis put forward by the authorities and the Greek press is also being definitively confirmed; for the past nine months they have accused the Albanian government of having arrested the leaders of this minority in Albania. The criminal prosecution and the investigation into the arrest of the five Omonia figures were taken up by the Tirana Prosecutor’s Office on 21 April of this year. This action had been preceded by several surprise searches by law-enforcement bodies in several districts of Albania, during which — among many unlicensed weapons — a number of people also had a large amount of anticonstitutional documentation found and seized. According to the then statement of the Ministry of Public Order, these were secret lists, maps showing more than 45 of the present Albanian territory as “Northern Epirus,” and clear proof of the alleged “Greek expansionist aims toward Albania and toward the South itself, with the aim of moving the lands of southern Albania.” Thus in May it became evident — according to the legal facts — that numerous writings and documents had been clearly verified previously by the law-enforcement bodies, and these are now being prepared to be sent to the judges with the completed material. On Monday the published issue would most of all illuminate the current biggest age. (z. l.) Gjirokastra

The police commissioner is declared “wanted”

Gjirokastër, a criminal case is opened Accused of involvement in oil smuggling, forged documents, and responsibility for the Peshkëpi incident Gjirokastër, a criminal case is opened The police commissioner is declared “wanted” Accused of involvement in oil smuggling, forged documents, and responsibility for the Peshkëpi incident GJIROKASTËR — The head of the Gjirokastër Police Commissariat, removed from this post at the end of May ’94, has been declared “wanted” and an arrest warrant has been issued for him. The latest announcement by the District Prosecutor’s Office regarding Iver Meraja is also accompanied by a series of serious accusations, among which stand out those accusing him of illegal emigration, but also of involvement in oil smuggling and possession of counterfeit money. Meraja is also accused of direct responsibility for the Peshkëpi incident, when a group of terrorists from Greece attacked a recruit barracks of the Order very close to the border. For two days the local radio station of Gjirokastër on Tuesday broadcast the appeal for the wanted man, giving detailed physical characteristics of the former head of the Police Commissariat, Ylber Meraja. Meanwhile, various sources from Gjirokastër report that after searching Meraja’s home, the law-enforcement bodies found a very large amount of drachmas. Before being appointed to head the Gjirokastër police, Meraja — who had come from Shkodra — had been a senior SHIK official in the district of Saranda. (r. k.)

The selection of beauties from Albania begins on TVSH

“Miss Albania '94” Valbona Salillari TIRANA — Tirana is once again filling up with beautiful girls, this time coming from all over Albania. Another TVSH event had brought together more than 30 girls, all of them dreaming of being named the “most beautiful in the land” for the year ’94 in Albania. But this was only the opening of the selection “season,” because until 30 September — when “Miss Albania ’94” will take place — the “winning” girls will have to endure many more selections. Although the organisers’ first statements are rather cautious, they confirm that only ten girls will make it through to convince the specialists at the first stage. Meanwhile, outside this ten — but not definitively — is also “Miss Deta,” proclaimed the most beautiful girl for the southern districts. This was almost one of the most rigorous criteria of the first selection. As it seems, beauties over 1.70 metres tall will not have the chance to compete in “Miss Albania ’94.” Another condition is also especially important, one that cannot yet be considered final. The arrival of beauties from the Diaspora, as well as other responsibilities, currently do not allow even the organisers themselves to determine the “winners.” Also planned is a “tour” by some of the qualified girls, who will go around different places — mostly secondary schools — in order to bring in other beauties who may find it difficult to take the initiative and present themselves to the organisers. Many of the girls who took part in the first selection told Gazeta Shqiptare that — during the period leading up to September — the decision is expected to be made for Albanian beauty contestants, and there they may also be given the chance to take part in another competition abroad. But the details and features of this work are still unclear so far; for now only the organisers, who until their initiative is carried out want to stay away from journalists’ attention. Thus begins the third adventure of Albanian beauties for the Miss crown. Earlier Valbona Selimllari and more recently Sidoj Rola had given Albanians the chance to discover the beauty of their own country. An opportunity that was twice broadcast outside Albania as well, and even highly praised. (e. l.)

Tirana, the capital of European sport

The international gathering begins today TIRANA — Tirana, the epicenter of European sport. For the first time, the Albanian capital will host leading figures in sport on the continent and for two consecutive days will gather the organisers of the Consultative Meeting for the Development of Sport (CDDS) within the Council of Europe. Today — at 9:30 a.m. — in the Conference Palace, the President of the Committee for the Development of Sport, Derek Casey, member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Rusell Johnston, and officials of the highest sporting authority, George Walker, Mariano Ravazzolo, Roland Kramer, Miklo Reves, Anthony Formosa, Gunther Myler, Joao Ary and Peter Glass, will take their seats in turn. Thus arrives in Albania its most important sporting event and at the same time the best opportunity to present the acute situation that currently exists for Albanian sport, especially in the economic and legal sphere. For the first time, important topics — to be discussed jointly — will also be placed on the table of Albanian sports officials, such as the preparation of sports legislation, the integration of the European Charter with legislation and cooperation between public authorities and the sporting movement, the sponsorship law and many others that naturally are also a major concern and a top priority for the sporting movement across our continent. Weapon thieves on trial

They were soldiers TIRANA — The trial began against 4 soldiers and 2 members of a military unit in the capital where — on 4 February of this year — other pistols had been reported missing. The soldiers — who are in custody — face serious charges of violating military service regulations, selling objects of special importance, theft of state property with weapons involved, and attempted removal without permission. Also among the defendants are two other people who had helped in the sale and purchase of the stolen weapons. (e. l.)

“More than 6 million dollars lost because of the embargo”

Energy Corporation TIRANA — Enormous losses for the Albanian Electric Power Corporation because of the embargo. The amount is 6 million 665,720 dollars, which, because of the non-export of energy to the former Yugoslavia and the transit through the country’s territory, has already driven this corporation into a very difficult financial situation. The UN decision on gradual sanctions against the countries of the former Yugoslavia in May 1992 had at that time led to the shutting down of the two high-voltage lines that exported energy to Prizren and Podgorica. At the same time, supply was interrupted to countries in the region whose transit passed through Yugoslav territory. To these cases have been added network losses, sales to only one state but at a reduced price, and those caused by water spillovers in the Drin cascade. (e. l.)

Now the city will be cleaned only by private firms

Decision of the Council of Ministers A final solution to the waste problem is hoped for Decision of the Council of Ministers Now the city will be cleaned only by private firms A final solution to the waste problem is hoped for TIRANA — City cleaning is also moving toward privatization. A government decision sets out a new solution to this problem. From now on it will no longer be the state коммунal enterprises that will handle waste collection; the service will be carried out by private companies. “This new proposed method — explains to Gazeta Shqiptare Abaz Cela, head of the communal sector at the Ministry of Construction — is necessary to change the current situation, which has not produced any results.” Local authorities will now divide the city into different zones for street cleaning and waste collection and will organize the necessary tenders in which the firms or companies that will take over this service will be determined. “Outsourcing cleaning will raise the level of service and better educate citizens — says Cela — and, on the other hand, the interaction of firms’ economic interests will also determine the way waste is collected.” A. YESTERDAY IN ALBANIA

THE PARLIAMENTARY COMMISSION ON CULTURE DISCUSSED THE FINANCIAL PROBLEMS OF TVSH AND ATSH — Protection of TV transmitters and preservation of the archive were the two main problems discussed by the Permanent Parliamentary Commission on Culture regarding TVSH. Alongside financial support for these problems, the TVSH leaders also presented to the parliamentarians several requests aimed at improving the financial condition of this institution. Almost the same requests were expressed and presented by the leaders of ATSH. IN BERAT, THE CITY LIBRARY IS GIVEN THE NAME OF VEXHI BUHARASE — The district council of Berat decided that the city library should take the name of the People’s Teacher Vexhi Buharaja. Although not widely known among the renowned Albanian scholars, he authored the book “Fjalor i veprës” and translated Firdusi and Saadiu. Buharaja also greatly enriched a part of the country’s tradition. Taking into account his contribution, many intellectuals from Berat have requested that he be declared an honorary academician and posthumous professor. THE CONSUMERS OF THE WATER SUPPLY ENTERPRISE NO. 2 IN TIRANA — The State Control Directorate in Tirana has uncovered many deficiencies in the financial operations of Water Supply Enterprise No. 2. Among other things it was discovered that for many supplies fictitious operations had been made; for an invoice of 651 thousand lek there was only that amount in the records. Likewise, amounts stolen from the cash register amounting to 4 thousand dollars were also noted.
