Fire on Durres beach: terror for cabin families
Electrical overload harms the homeless
Amid the tongues of flame, the body of a four-month-old baby is also scorched. The infant is in very serious condition in hospital
DURRES — Fire on the beach. These were moments of terror and anxiety that shook the citizens, the temporary residents of the beach cabins — writes “Tirana” with the signature of the citizen. Excessive electrical load in one of them caused a violent fire, which engulfed 12 cabins one after another. Many families lost their homes and, in many cases, everything they had. Unfortunately, one of them could barely be rescued from the fire. It was no longer possible to save the infant, who had just passed the first 100 days of life, and who suffered burns over 16 percent of his body. By Wednesday morning, doctors in charge of resuscitation at the Tirana Hospital told Gazeta Shqiptare that the condition of the baby from Durres remained extremely critical. “About 30 percent of this baby’s body — the doctors add — has been severely damaged by burns.”
Everything had happened after the early morning hours. It then turned into moments of terror and anxiety for many of those homeless people who, for two years, had chosen to live in the wooden cabins built decades earlier for beach holidaymakers. An electric spark — very easily foreseeable in a structure worn out by the sun — thus turned into a true tragedy for hundreds and for small children, as well as for the breadwinners of several families who lost much of their homes and improvised possessions. e.th.

Bread, a new battle: “The ovens give off a lot of heat, but also pollution”
Residents protest
TIRANA — After the bread crisis of a few years ago, it is now the bakeries that are causing another, growing concern for many residents. In many cases, their construction on the lower floors of apartment buildings is now drawing sharp reactions from citizens and even from health and environmental authorities. “The problem is not their opening near apartment blocks,” specialists say, “but the fact that many technical and sanitary requirements have not been observed.”
The concern seems to have grown greatly with the arrival of high temperatures. The heat emitted by the bakeries has become very noticeable for citizens whose apartments are located directly above these workshops. “In the case of a resident in the area near the market, an investigation by the Institute of Hygiene proved that temperatures inside the home rise by several degrees,” specialists say. According to them, the heat is made worse by the lack of adequate technical insulation conditions.
In these cases the problem is a clear concern — we have requested improvements and mitigation of the situation — which require time during the work process.
The many complaints and petitions from citizens have already been answered by the health authorities. In Tirana alone, three units have been closed by the Hygiene Directorate. On the other hand, the Committee for Environmental Protection is also involved. Its specialists have also noted cases outside Tirana. Recently they intervened in two such bakeries in the district of Laç. (a.m.)
Drug cultivation also in Peqin: farmer arrested
Two more dynym discovered
PEQIN — Peqin is added to the list of Albanian towns where farmers have preferred to plant narcotic crops. This time the area is about two dynym and the 32-year-old cultivator, Hasan Gosci, has been placed under arrest by the public order authorities. Meanwhile, in recent days similar episodes in several districts — almost throughout Albania — the Court of Appeal has sentenced two brothers from Kruja to three years in prison each for having cultivated a narcotic crop last year in the village of Mazhe. Before yesterday, Mustafa and Asllan Mali had been sentenced by the Kruja Court to 7 and 5 years in prison. (e.l)
The social security service will be computerized
Registration by the end of '94
TIRANA — Soon the Social Security network in Albania will also be computerized. A newly approved law by Parliament provides the legal basis for the introduction — for the first time — of Security Numbers and Security Cards. Both of these new elements offer many advantages both to insured persons — they will find it easier to communicate with the Insurance Agency to collect benefits — and to third parties: the Social or Health Insurance network, which will find it simpler to collect, process and electronically communicate data. The insurance number — a set of 9 digits, numbers and letters — will contain, in coded and highly synthetic form, the main identity data of the insured person. It will also be printed on the Security Card. By the end of this year, the Social Insurance Institute will issue this special number for all insured persons and then the corresponding cards as well. Coca-Cola starts production in Tirana
“In Albania also Fanta”
The only mystery: the formula
The plant manager speaks: “Those Romanian bottles...”
Is there a mystery behind Coca-Cola in Albania? Yes, it is the “mystery” of the skills. It is the only “meaning,” that is, the seven components of the mix for the ingredients of an extremely secret recipe, kept for decades, which arrives in Albania in a tank that is then poured into the quantity from which the Coca-Cola we drink is born. But is there any other secret? “If the reference is to the production history, which is not made in Albania but in Romania, or in other Eastern countries, that is a false mystery...” Giancarlo Mattazzi, managing director of Coca-Cola Albania, answers calmly despite the controversies and the intense heat.
But is it true that the Coca-Cola bottles circulating in Albania were produced here or in Romania?
“Our Albanian plant has been working at full capacity for several days. Just check the label: it clearly states that the production is Albanian in origin for Albania.”
But before, labels with the stamp “made in Bucarest” were circulating...
“That is true, but there is no mystery here: those were the first bottles with those joint-venture company labels, and for the first three months we will sell Coca-Cola as an import from Romania and Italy. And I will explain why: bottles are not manufactured in Albania, so it was necessary to import them into the country and then bring in the production assembled here. The plan provided for production to start in August, but we started earlier instead, because we had strong demand. In just one month, 1.5 million bottles have already been consumed in Albania.”
But was the production chain functioning even on inauguration day?
“Of course: that day there were 500 invited guests and dozens of television crews from all over the world. Just ask them...”
What will the next step be...?
“We have already increased the investment by another 2 million dollars. Precisely because Muhtar Kent, president of the Central Eastern European division of Coca-Cola Company, came to Albania: we are thinking about the future. And I am revealing a piece of news to you: by the end of the year we will start producing Fanta and Sprite in Albania as well...” p.re.

The mortgage seal disappears
Vlora, office closed: suspicions of forgery
Prosecutor’s Office begins investigations
Vlora, office closed: suspicions of forgery
The mortgage seal disappears
Prosecutor’s Office begins investigations
VLORA — The disappearance of the mortgage seal at the Court of Vlora remains mysterious. And for three consecutive months the office — where the property of more than 100,000 inhabitants is registered and certified — has not been operating. The possibility of the circulation of false seals — as some lawyers maintain — but also the episode of the mysterious disappearance of this important seal may perhaps have recently prompted the Prosecutor’s Office to open the criminal case. Meanwhile, the Vlora Prosecutor’s Office confirms to Gazeta Shqiptare that investigators have also questioned the former employee of the mortgage office, A.S.
The hypothesis of the circulation of false seals has cast a shadow of suspicion over many properties, causing a real chaos even among the owners themselves. Thus, it is not uncommon for several owners to claim the same plot of land at the same time, even for land with a sale-and-purchase deed from the same year. This is also the largest “contingent” of property cases being tried at the Court of Vlora. The disappearance of the mortgage seal may have also meant that, for many lands that had previously been unclaimed or notional, owners are now emerging. In any case, everything now belongs to the investigators, who continue to work to shed light on this mystery. On the other hand, sources from the Court assure that very soon the mortgage office may reopen — after three months of suspension — and it will finally operate with a new seal. (si.M.)
A clandestine speedboat is seized
Migration
VLORA — A fight against clandestine speedboats on the Vlora coastline. A successful operation by the Vlora Border Police made it possible to discover and seize — at midnight last Saturday — a clandestine speedboat on which 13 illegal migrants had boarded, while it was heading toward Italian shores. Everyone was taken to the Vlora Police Commissariat. The migrants’ speedboat was confiscated.
Berisha decrees credits
For the flooded
TIRANA — A special decree issued by President of the Republic Sali Berisha will now favor and help the many families in the flooded areas — Has, Kukës, Tropojë and Pukë — affected by hydroelectric plants. In this way, residents — those who received agricultural land from the commissions — will benefit from housing loans — 150,000 lek for each family member — which will be granted by the Agricultural Commercial Bank. The same will also be offered to families that have already been settled by the state in privatized dwellings free of charge, only if they put the dwelling back at the disposal of the local government.

YESTERDAY IN ALBANIA
IN THE NORTH A SPECIAL UNIT FOR EXTINGUISHING FOREST FIRES — The Forest Service Enterprise and the Puka District Council have proposed the creation of a special structure for extinguishing fires throughout the northern area of the country. Taking into account the bitter experience of last summer as well — forest fires had reached worrying proportions — specialists believe that the mobile organization does not guarantee the prevention of the spread of forest fire damage. Therefore, they have proposed the creation of special structures.
