Tirana’s big appetite
The municipality publishes the figures for this six-month period
Tirana’s big appetite
Here is what the capital consumes
For each resident: 20 kilograms of meat, 91 eggs...
TIRANA — Meat: 1,223 tons, remaining the main food of the capital’s residents. The data presented by the veterinary office at Tirana Municipality speak to the place this product holds in the nutritional structure of citizens. In just the first 6 months of this year, more than 87,000-odd tons of various kinds of meat, 11,660 quintals of sausages, and nearly 1,400 quintals of fish entered through imports. These figures are added to the large quantities of slaughtered and consumed livestock, which amount to nearly 3,500 head of cattle, the largest share of which is veal with 2,973 head.
"Among all food products with the highest animal content that have entered and been sold in Tirana," says Selva Haxhymyri, head of the veterinary office at the municipality, "we have carried out strict checks on more than 184 firms that imported these products from over 30 countries." In fact, the office’s data also speak of many other food products consumed this year by the capital’s residents, such as: 26,569 quintals of cheese, 566 quintals of butter and margarine, nearly 3,500 quintals of condensed and liquid milk, over 1,000 quintals of honey, and more than 39 million eggs. According to these figures, each resident of the capital has been expected on average to consume during this period 20.2 kilograms of meat and meat products, 6.1 kilograms of cheese, 1.8 kilograms of butter and margarine, and 91 eggs.
"Our main goal," Haxhymyri continues, "has been to ensure the standards and cleanliness of the foods being sold. Although the workload has been very heavy, there have been many cases in which we have blocked goods and buried them." Thus, during this year 379 quintals of spoiled meat, 241 quintals of sausages, hamburgers and meatballs, 140 quintals of cheese, 10 quintals of fish and over 20,000 eggs have been confiscated. Meanwhile, the veterinary inspectorate has also fined more than 100 people who carried out illegal slaughter of livestock.
The arrival of summer, accompanied by various vegetables and fruits, has only slightly influenced the capital’s food structure. Recently, the consumption of livestock products has experienced a slight drop of just 13 percent.

Marijuana farmers seize the fields
8 kilograms seized by Berat police
Another grower arrested
BERAT — Another faded prison picture comes to an end. And once again the cultivation of narcotic plants is on the scene. This time Nazmi Kapllani from the village of Çitq in Berat has been arrested; in his house law-enforcement officers discovered nearly eight kilograms of "Cannabis Sativa", a plant intended for the production of marijuana. Meanwhile, the investigators also did not miss a few grams of seed, which the farmer had not been able to sow or had perhaps intended to use on another plot of land. As confirmed by the law-enforcement bodies of the Berat police station, the entire quantity of the seized narcotic plant belonged to a freshly cut crop.
Thus another "triumph" of drugs over wheat is confirmed, even though, in the agricultural months to come, the country has turned into a season of harvesting narcotic plants. Although law-enforcement bodies continue to seize narcotic plants almost every day and in every area of Albania, the phenomenon of their cultivation has reached truly alarming proportions. Perhaps the amendment of the relevant article in the Penal Code — which provides for a sentence of 5 to 20 years of imprisonment for cultivators of narcotic plants — is still unknown to many of the patriarchal farmers. Or perhaps the desire to make money — even illegally — continues to grow ever stronger. (c. l.)
Albanian samba for the great Brazilian victory
After the "USA '94" final
TIRANA — Joy and disappointment gripped Albania too at the end of the final match of the "USA '94" football World Cup. Brazil’s victory, which thrilled thousands of Albanian fans of this champion team, has "wounded" all those who had the World Cup in Baggio’s hands.
The biggest celebrations took place on Sunday evening, when the roads in the city of Shkodër were packed, and for several hours it was turned into a small Brazil in the heart of Europe. The first signal, immediately after the end of the match, came in the streets, in homes, and as a greeting with a long burst of automatic gunfire. Later, sporadic shots fired with various weapons — fortunately there were no victims — accompanied the wonderful Brazilian-style night of the people of Shkodër. More than 2,000 people, until 3 in the morning, came out into the main squares to celebrate amid noise, fireworks and car horns the Brazilian Cup. Many fires were lit in the streets, where Shkodër fans shouted: "Brazil won, Italy is done."
The people of Shkodër had hoped for the great victory of the Latin American team from the very start of the tournament. The Brazilian supporters’ association had even sent a congratulatory telegram to Romario’s and Bebeto’s team. And it was precisely these two who, carrying the yellow flag of Brazil — bought from a trader in Italy — toured the whole city by car, honking loudly.
The situation in the other cities was almost completely different. In Kavajë, the most beautiful moment of that final was the installation of a giant screen in the city. Meanwhile in Tirana, in the streets that were also crowded here, the only distinctive thing was the car horn for Brazil. Most of the people were Italians with their heads down, watching the cars — among them also with Italian plates — passing quietly beside them. In a capital that leans more toward European teams, the pain had already begun with Germany’s elimination. Italy’s defeat did nothing more than deepen that disappointment, which will soon give way to the pleasant memories of a great final.

Durrës: new hospital
OPEC funds it
DURRËS — Soon Durrës will have a new hospital. The agreement between a foundation of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC, and the Albanian government was ratified by the latter during its regular meeting on Monday.
The agreement provides for the use of a fund worth several million dollars to build this important facility for the city. The new hospital in Durrës will be of the general type. It will have a capacity of 170 beds.
Gun trafficker stopped
— Illegal trade also in firearms. The 25-year-old from Shkodër, Dod Gega, was sent to the cells of the Krujë police station after new shotguns and over 100 cartridges were found. It had only been an ordinary road check by law-enforcement officers — the national Shkodër-Tirana traffic police — during the passage of the hunting weapons in Gega’s car, stopped somewhere near Thumanë. Although the investigation began immediately — apart from confirming Gega’s detention — the other details of this episode are missing, especially concerning how these shotguns entered Albania or their destination. UNESCO’s eye on Butrint
TIRANA — UNESCO’s interest in the ancient city of Butrint is growing. After its declaration as a "world heritage" site, the well-known international organization has now decided to take further steps. A letter has been sent to the Ministry of Culture in Tirana. Through it, the Albanian authorities are asked to identify the most urgent areas for the preparation of a conservation plan. If this cannot be done, they will themselves visit Butrint to see the possibilities for direct intervention.
Albanian experts are working out their response in detail. It is expected to place special emphasis on the need to restore the territory where the ancient ruins are located. In fact, water accumulated for a long time has so far hindered further excavation and restoration efforts. Only 5 percent of the area of the old city has been uncovered. The Ministry of Culture aims for Berat and Gjirokastra to be added to the list of 315 sites declared "world heritage". (bac)
SOS for the ancient city of Lissus
LEZHË —
Danger for the ancient city of Lissus in Lezhë, nearly 2,400 years old. The alarm comes from the Vice President of the Municipal Council, Naim Sherri, who continues to denounce the building of "factories inside the archaeological city". "I have now started to tear down the walls too," Sherri says, still concerned, he is also an archaeology specialist. According to him, this phenomenon could stop not only the destruction of the architecture of the ancient city — and even that of the new one — but also the decline in the number of tourists who have often been left amazed. However, although the problem has been raised even to the levels of local government, the damage to the ancient Lissus continues to be an everyday reality. (Ir. Ra.)
Interest in Marxism: nostalgia or...
CURSORY REALITY
TIRANA — The final formalities are being completed that will block the funds of libraries and warehouses from the books of political copies. Many copies of the classics of Marxism-Leninism in Albanian and their doctrinal derivatives of ideological Marxism, mainly translated and of Soviet origin, have been around in homes, and even more so today, the now-transformable part thanks to a kind of sadism, laughable. A large quantity of cardboard and the most common box in the form of other books is apparent and will be the same, leading to...

The Nano dossier, the final chapter
The Cassation process is set for 28 July
One year after the arrest of the socialist leader
TIRANA — The Nano case returns to the scene once again. Exactly one year after his arrest, the Nano dossier will be before the judges for the third time. This time in the Court of Cassation, whose leaders have chosen 28 July to hold the final process for the socialist leader, sentenced by the Tirana Court and the Court of Appeal to 10 years of imprisonment. According to the socialist camp — the first to confirm the date of the Cassation process — the judges will be Vanjoi Kosta, Kristofor Peçi and Agim Gjole, the three judges who will decide definitively the fate of Nano. According to the same source, the three Cassation judges will have equal powers during the conduct of this process.
As is known, this time Nano will not have the opportunity to take part directly in his final process, but will be represented by the lawyers Sankaku and Tirana. "We are convinced that our client is innocent," lawyer Sankaku told Gazeta Shqiptare, "and it is enough for the Cassation judges to become acquainted with the reality of this case." Only eight days now remain until the decision, which will ultimately determine the fate of the former Prime Minister and PS leader, Fatos Nano. From the Tirana Court to the Court of Appeal, only 300,000 lek had been reduced from the civil obligation, while in Cassation. Eight more days are needed. (c. l.)

DURRËS, REMAINS OF THE CHEMICAL PLANT A DANGER TO THE ENVIRONMENT — Considered to have already been closed for several months, the waste accumulated for a long time at the chemical plant in Durrës is causing great concern because of the ecological danger it represents. There are about 500 tons of material (still classified as pesticide) left in the warehouses of this plant, which cannot be removed. The greatest danger is posed by the bichromate residues, which have often also been used for road surfacing. According to specialists, this urgently requires immediate intervention.
LEZHË, THREE PEOPLE ARRESTED FOR ILLEGAL FISHING — Three people have been arrested by the criminal police of the Lezhë police station — Nikoll Kola, 30, Lulezim Kola, 21, and Pal Hasi, 30 — who were carrying out illegal fishing on the coast of Tale. The three were fishing using dynamite and caprols. This case appears to be the latest. The use of explosives on our coast has become a phenomenon that has spread widely.
TEPELENË, TWO ELECTRIC CABLE THIEVES ARRESTED — The theft of electric cables in Tepelenë is stopped. It was the police of this city’s police station that has now uncovered the authors of a major theft worth 10 million lek, committed at the electricity company. The two perpetrators — Luan Gjoni, 35, and Artan Bardhi, 30 — had gone out to steal in Vlorë where they were stopped by law-enforcement officers.
The real ones...
LEZHË — Latin American samba in Lezhë for Brazil’s victory. And this time it is completely original. A young Brazilian couple, Evi and Elina Santana — believers who have been working in this city for a long time — carrying their small monthly flag on their shoulders and with the Brazilian flag in hand, led the crowds of supporters from Lezhë who, together with them, rejoiced over the victory of Romario’s team. For several minutes, their joy was accompanied by cheerful cries and the car horns moving noisily through the city.
