Error... live on TV

The winner of the «Benz» changes After the lottery «Around luck for 12 weeks» EDMOND LAÇI TIRANË — A small calculation mistake, broadcast live on TV during the show «Around luck for 12 weeks», gave several hours of false happiness to a resident of Kuçova. Only a few hours after midnight on Saturday, when the hall of the Opera and Ballet Theatre was still shaken by the success of the show, while a family in Kuçova may have been shaken much more — the 4 o'clock news bulletin read: “Ticket 891577 announced in Kuçova and declared the winner after the third draw is invalid, because the winning ticket of the second draw, 416764, which in the first check during the live broadcast turned out to be unsold, was in fact sold.” Thus the “Benz” — the grand prize of the lottery — after 16 unforgettable hours slipped from the “chest” of the man from Kuçova and became the property, perhaps, of another lucky person, this time from Pogradec. On Sunday morning someone from Kuçova had shown up at the Opera and Ballet Theatre, where the “Benz” winner of the lottery “Around luck for 12 weeks” was still being awaited. A man who had traveled before dawn from his distant town, perhaps to collect what more than 1 million Albanians had been dreaming of for nearly three months. “It was a middle-aged man, wearing a dark jacket” — some of the organizers of the show told Gazeta Shqiptare. “He was asking to meet some lottery official, but no one received him”. The two presenters of the show «Around luck for 12 weeks» Opera and Ballet Theatre — even though he did not want to talk about himself, it became clear that he was the winner announced by TV. But according to the staff who had dealt with the enigmatic man from Kuçova, he was trying to claim the salary of his wife; he was the head of a relatively poor family, but he also held a driver’s license. Meanwhile, no one with knowledge had come to the Lottery Commission, which after verifying the error had been working day and night. “The mistake was understood at 1:30 at night” one of the members of the Commission told Gazeta Shqiptare. “When the person who made the technical error on the computer checked again the winning tickets of the three draws.” For the Lottery Commission everything is now clear. “A female member of the Commission, in her haste, confused the unsold ticket with the winning ticket of the second draw — says a member of the Commission — as happens when we say in everyday speech the documents needed to ensure the accuracy of the Lottery, while there had been extra funds so that the unsold draw — almost drawn tickets — as well as the two counter-tickets of the second and third draw.” After this, the winner of the ticket from the third draw — which, according to the Commission, after verification, once it had emerged as the winner of the second draw, the members of the Commission explained that the third draw is called a “draw without value”. But while one family in Kuçova may be going through moments of despair, another in Pogradec is feeling the satisfaction of a man who has won and understood it. It is still unknown how the winner of the second draw reacted after losing calmly “Rasto padashtu ka bile qysur bileten e pashitur dhe po ta llogarisë llotarinë kjo i paska shumëfishuar fituese. Ky person 99.99 për qind e ka fituar llotarinë. Është lënë për lexim vetëm biletat, por ende kemi shpërndarë disa e herë. Sidomos gazeta e parë e ka në Pogradec”. Thus the “Benz” — the biggest prize ever awarded in Albania — becomes the protagonist of a completely unique story. [EN] After the lottery “Around luck for 12 weeks”: Error... live on TV. The 22nd of March is celebrated throughout Albania

TIRANË — Large celebrations on the occasion of 22 March, a day that has remained in everyone’s memory as the day of the triumph of democracy, are planned for today in Tirana and in the country’s main cities. Albania thus marks today the second anniversary of the event that signaled the country’s break with the dictatorial system, which ruled over it for almost 50 years. To celebrate this most important event in the contemporary history of Albanians, a large number of cultural and sports activities will take place today. In Tirana, in the large sports complex “Dinamo” near the artificial lake, a parade and competitions with the participation of the best athletes from the capital’s clubs will be held today. This time children have also been taken into account. A festival titled “Democratic Spring ’94” will be organized for them. The capital’s Municipality has taken on a large share of the organization of the activities. Thus, once again, as two years ago, the streets of Tirana will be filled with people. Back then the city groups of Tirana celebrated joyfully the victory of democracy. More than the victory of a single party, 22 March marks the victory of an aspiration suppressed for decades. In fact, it was the victory of an entire people. [EN] Anniversary. March 22 is being celebrated throughout Albania. The mine on the verge of bankruptcy

TIRANË — Albania’s oldest mine is heading toward closure. For several years the bitumen mine in Selenicë has been facing major financial and technical difficulties. Recently, from among the newspaper’s most important sectors, only one is still operating. According to the enterprise’s union, the main reason for today’s economic difficulties is the incompetence of the mine’s management staff, who have worsened the difficult situation through their inability. Following the union’s complaints, a State Control Service team has recently been carrying out an inspection in this enterprise. [EN] Selenicë. The mine on the verge of bankruptcy. A clandestine boat is stopped in Vlorë

VLORË — Attempts to traffic people clandestinely toward the Apulian coasts continue, but this time the traffickers encountered the swift response of the Albanian naval guards. A motorboat was blocked, a small motorboat filled with refugees. In the Karaburun Gulf, Albanian sailors blocked an old motorboat that tried to cross secretly Albanian territorial waters heading for Italy. On board the motorboat, among the large group of Albanian illegal migrants, women and underage children were also found. According to Albanian authorities, the motorboat that reached the clandestine migrants, who had set off from the Albanian coast near Vlorë, was in poor technical condition and, out at sea without lighting, would have seriously endangered the lives of the migrants. In a public announcement, Albanian authorities call on their citizens not to undertake such attempts, which endanger people’s lives. “We will try to stop any attempt at illegal crossing of the state border,” the announcement stressed. A young man is shot in Fier

TIRANË — Dashamir Resuli, 22, from the village of Qenas in this district, has been hit and is hospitalized in the Fier intensive care unit. The incident occurred on Sunday evening, when a car carrying three people slowly approached Resuli’s house. The victim, who at that moment was standing right in front of his house gate, was shot once with a firearm by the others. The police have identified Lush Smaka, a fellow villager of Resuli, as the perpetrator of this act; he is being sought by law enforcement forces. So far, the motive is believed to be an old revenge between the two men. [EN] For revenge. A young man is shot in Fier. Somalia, two Italian journalists killed

General Fiore speaks: it was an execution The attackers first took away the escort, then shot them in the head Journalist Ilaria Alpi killed in Mogadishu MOGADISH — The Italian TG3 journalist Ilaria Alpi and her cameraman Milan Hrovatin were killed in Somalia by a group of Somalis. The two journalists had arrived in Mogadishu separately, coming from the southern part, where they had been stationed, most likely to meet some of their colleagues. It was a real execution. “They shot to kill,” said General Carmine Fiore, commander of the Italian contingent in Somalia. Fiore, together with the command group, had arrived at the “Garibaldi” crossroads, where the injured were being transported immediately. “They were six — Fiore says — armed persons on board a Land Rover. They overtook and blocked the car of the Italian journalists and forced the armed escort (two Somali civilians) to move away. Only then did they open fire. Ilaria Alpi died immediately, struck by a bullet in the head. Another bullet also hit the cameraman in the head and killed him. [EN] Somalia: two Italian journalists killed. Bosnia: the Serbs leave the city of Maglaj

BEOGRAD — The Serbo-Bosnians have lifted the siege, after more than eight months, of the Muslim area of Maglaj, in northern Bosnia, where nearly 100,000 civilians were already living in despair. Humanitarian aid had arrived here at the end of summer; since then survival had been guaranteed by UN planes, which arrived dropping some [aid?] by parachute. Since the beginning of yesterday’s developments, the commanders on the ground are in the area, where two thirds of the territory of Maglaj had already been left without full supplies. They are the ones who endured the fiercest siege, as the bombardments were nonstop. The first witnesses in the homes of Maglaj say they were damaged by Serbian shells. But the end of the siege has come, and this seems to the observers a clear sign of retreat on the part of the Serbs, together with the political one (apart from the military one) pursued by the Muslims and Croats at the beginning, with the cease-fire, that is, with the agreement on the future division of the confederation of Croatia. The importance of the separation lies in the fact that it seems to show a willingness on the part of the Serbs to abandon a relatively large territory that they controlled. [EN] The long siege ends. YESTERDAY IN ALBANIA

ACTIVITY INCREASES AT THE KORÇA CUSTOMS OFFICE — The flow of goods to the Korça customs branch has increased. The large quantity of fruit, vegetables, food products and other goods imported by traders has led the staff of this customs post to believe that revenues for the coming year will double. For the months of January and February alone, combined revenues amount to over 35 million lek, or 10 percent more than in the same period of the previous year. IN DELVINA, CITIZENS’ SAVINGS DEPOSITS DOUBLE — Citizens’ savings deposits at the Savings Bank in the district of Delvina have doubled compared with the same period last year. The main reason for this phenomenon, according to the bank’s specialists, is the employment abroad of 61.2 members from each Delvina family. Since February of this year, foreign-currency deposits have also begun at this bank branch, which came with the drachma. IN GRAMSH, WATER USERS’ ASSOCIATIONS — To play the role of intermediary between the water enterprise and private farmers. This is the purpose of the creation and activity of the 45 water users’ associations created in the district of Gramsh. These associations help solve irrigation problems through the normal distribution of water to their fields. They also contribute to greater responsibility for the protection and maintenance of irrigation works. Private farmers’ interest in becoming members is growing. [EN] Yesterday in Albania. YESTERDAY IN THE WORLD

CLINTON, THE 4 JOURNALISTS ARE NOT A PACK OF SHARKS — Bill Clinton replied to journalists, who of late have been taking him to task over the Whitewater affair, by describing them as a pack of sharks. The chance to take revenge on them came during a meeting with young people at the town hall. The President made a few biting jokes at the information operators when a boy asked him how he manages to deal with important issues despite the critics from journalists on his back. “Eh ... the president replied — I try to answer questions as directly as possible. And I have to admit that sometimes journalists are like a pack of sharks: they pounce and then the argument no longer matters.” ENVIRONMENT: GREECE, ECOLOGISTS ON CHIMNEYS IN PROTEST — To draw public opinion’s attention to the pollution of the air in Piraeus, with a carbon dioxide level among the highest in Europe, a well-known group of ecologists climbed a 54-m[?]-high chimney, the chimney of a condemned power plant, and stayed at the top for a period during which they had written “stop the blockade, do not open the thermal power plant”. UNITED KINGDOM: IRA SHOOTS DOWN HELICOPTER, FOR NOW THERE ARE NO TALKS — A British military helicopter was brought down by a grenade launched with a mortar shell at one of the army bases in Crossmaglen, a border village in southern Northern Ireland. The pilot lost control of the helicopter and was killed. 800 meters away from the test, but nevertheless it failed to evacuate the impacts on the houses located beneath the flight zone as it was falling.
