The mystery of the killer microbe

The type of infection is still unknown. Suspicions of typhoid, salmonellosis and cholera. While tests are pending, all the sick have been isolated in quarantine HEALTH ALERT / Berat and Kuçovë: 2 dead and 90 in hospital ARMAND MERO BERAT — Berat and Kuçovë are under the grip of a deadly infection. A microbe so far unidentified — believed to have spread through the water supply network due to its many sources of contamination — has struck these areas, causing 2 deaths and dozens more hospitalizations. According to the first findings and the symptoms shown by the patients, the mysterious microbe may hide typhoid, salmonellosis or even cholera. However, a final answer from the specialized laboratories is expected soon, while several samples have also been sent abroad to Italy and Turkey. While tests are pending, all the sick are now isolated in quarantine. The first signs of the epidemic spread of the infection appeared in the first days of September, when on the 3rd the first affected people were admitted to the hospital: the serviceman from the Pilots Regiment in Ura Vajgurore. Initially treated only as cases of food poisoning, the doctors’ alarm was understood only in their full seriousness as genuine and serious cases. But just a few days later the number of people showing the same symptoms — vomiting and diarrhea — increased alarmingly, reaching the previous weekend — after reports from Berat that cholera cases had also been found[?]. It is precisely these hypotheses that led to the isolation of all the sick under quarantine conditions. In Berat the military hospital is surrounded and no one is allowed to enter except specialized doctors. The same situation exists in Tirana, where on Friday and Saturday around 30 patients were transferred to the Infectious Diseases Unit. Special guards watch over the two-storey building of this unit and do not allow any direct communication with the patients, while the doctors themselves have begun taking protective measures for themselves during visits with the sick. For safety reasons, people who had contact with the patients were also placed in quarantine. The health situation for most of them appears to have improved, while 3 people — as of Sunday evening — were still in serious condition and being treated in intensive care. The worsened situation brought the Minister of Health, Maksim Cikuli, onto the main Sunday evening news bulletin, as he personally went to the Military Hospital in Tirana to see the situation. While speaking about the measures taken by the medical institutions, Cikuli once again appealed to the population to ensure "high standards of hygiene in use, especially of drinking water, in the areas affected by pollution". Four killed in a serious mountain road accident

They were going to a wedding LEZHE — A serious car accident late last night on the banks of the Mirditë river on the "zisi" highway ended in tragedy when the vehicle plunged into a ravine, causing the death of 4 people and serious injuries to as many others. All the victims — residents of the village of Rril in Lezhë — were on their way to a wedding in the village of Sërëndë, Mirditë. From the departure point in the Fani area, after descending a slope the car slipped into the ravine. The four dead — Ndue, Mark, Bardha and Drina — were all members of the Milloshi family. Among them, Drita Milloshi tried to shield her 2-year-old child with her body. She succeeded, but died herself. (I. R.)

In the villages there is a shortage of electricity

KAVAJE — For some time now, talk has been circulating that the villages around Kavajë have been plunged back into the old days. Even in the few cases when the electricity does not go off, it is so weak that it is barely enough for lighting. The villages are bleak and ruined only because of this desolate sight. But the shortage of electricity has also become a serious problem for the health sector in this area. There have been cases where births in the maternity ward were carried out by candlelight, seriously endangering the life of the mother and child. (Q. C.)

"I want to give a prosthetic leg to an Albanian"

An offer from a German TIRANE — A German citizen has offered an unusual humanitarian aid for Albanians: a leg. In fact, it is a complete and sophisticated prosthetic of the right leg as well as a pair of crutches. The prosthetic leg is made of wood and leather with a special metal — light and strong at the same time — usually used for astronauts’ equipment. It was bought as a German brand and was intended to be used by the owner’s mother. After her death, the prosthesis remained in the house as a relic. Having found information about the shortage of such devices in Albania, the German citizen has been inclined to donate the "leg" to an Albanian. But to avoid any possible speculation — given the considerable value of the prosthesis — the donor asks to be contacted personally and to have the prosthesis used. Those interested can contact the address: Tiranë, "Myslym Shyri" Building 8, Staircase 2, Apartment 17.

Minister Martino: Stop the clandestines

"Seasonal work must be organized" Visit to Tirana after the recent exoduses TIRANE — The problem of clandestine migration from Albania to Italy is still being discussed. On the occasion of his visit to Albania, the Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Martino expressed his opinion on this phenomenon. He also asked the Albanian government and Albanians to work more in cooperation with Italy on seasonal work — something that has so far been promised but not realized — which could help strike at the phenomenon of clandestine migration. Also, of great interest is the development of cooperation with Italy against trafficking and smuggling, while the need to regulate the legal movement of people was emphasized. In this framework, measures for greater control of the coast and improvement of bilateral relations were mentioned. Martino said that the problem should also be viewed on a social level, by creating job opportunities and not only through punitive measures. This is a challenge that must be addressed carefully by both countries. Clandestines, he said, cannot be a long-term solution. On the contrary, the aim should be the organization of seasonal work and the easing of procedures for those who move legally. Cooperation with the Albanian authorities remains essential to stem new exoduses and avoid tragedies at sea. In this sense, the need for better public information and a greater role for the relevant institutions was also underlined.

Meanwhile, various people with woodcutting are bringing losses to their income of 1,300,000 lek, while no such measures have been taken. BERAT TOO UNDER ITS OWN DEEP CORRUPTION? — Thus counted 29 institutions and enterprises that owe the telephone company more than 1,000,206 lek. And only the first among 14, namely the municipality of the city, which must pay 690 thousand lek. For these, Telekom has taken the measure of cutting the telephone signal, while on the other hand state subscribers protest about the lack of correctness on the part of the bill issuers. This will be a prolonged matter, but with greater strictness from the bill collectors.
