Is the epidemic slowing down?
The first discharges from hospitals
Optimism grows but the alarm reaches Peshkopi
ARMAND MERO
TIRANA — Suspicion of cholera has now reached Peshkopi as well. Yesterday, an adolescent girl with severe diarrhea was urgently hospitalized. According to doctors, the patient may have been affected by the disease, but tests have still not confirmed with certainty whether it is cholera. Other worrying reports also come from Librazhdi, where several children have been admitted.
TIRANA — The cholera epidemic appears to be starting to ease. The official figures suggest that a large number of people have already left the hospitals. By Sunday, according to the Ministry of Health, out of 380 hospitalized patients, 170 are suspected cases, while only 97 have been fully confirmed by bacteriological tests. However, the hopes raised by these figures are only a reassuring sign. The existence of uncertainty — Kuvendi, Librazhdi and Tirana — is an indicator that does not allow the country to lower preventive protective measures. Hygiene and everyone’s caution must continue to be at the highest level.
Doctors and nurses have been equipped with masks and gloves, and one person stands at the ward entrance to prevent outsiders from entering. Even specialist doctors are not talking about cholera. "We have many cases of severe diarrhea and dehydration," says a doctor from the infectious disease ward. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has announced that a total of 11 children have been admitted to the infectious ward. All of them are ill, all from one family, and were brought urgently from Peshkopia.
The shadow of cholera has also worried Burrel. For several days now, one person there has been kept in quarantine and has shown symptoms of cholera. While laboratory results have still not arrived, doctors do not rule out the possibility of a simple gastrointestinal complication.
Meanwhile, good news comes from other centers where the number of hospitalized patients is falling. In Tirana and in the hospitals of the districts, numerous hygienic and sanitary measures continue in the capital. Thus, in just these days, drinking-water reservoirs have been inspected, several roadside stalls have been closed, and ongoing checks continue in the network of alcoholic beverage trade for lack of sanitary conditions.
Other data speak of increased caution and hygienic discipline among the population. But doctors stress that the situation remains fragile and that any negligence could lead to a new spread.

Expired medicines in state pharmacies
They will be destroyed
TIRANA — The issue of expired medicines in state pharmacies, as well as their sale without a license, has resurfaced "on the scene." It is a concern raised once again by the General Directorate of Financial Police. Yesterday there were reports that expired preparations had been found and seized in several state pharmacies. Some of the medicines have been impounded and their destruction is now expected.
According to sources, inspections will continue in Tirana and in the districts. The responsible institutions have requested the cooperation of the Ministry of Health for the inventory of medicines and the withdrawal from use of those whose expiration date has passed.
