Strong protest from the Albanian Foreign Ministry
The 'visa war' begins
Tirana: «Athens is blocking us»
TIRANE — A new dispute has broken out between the neighboring countries of Albania and Greece, not over visas. On Sunday evening, an official communiqué from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Tirana had delivered a protest note to the Greek side in Albania — the chargé d'affaires Tulupas — condemning what it says are blatant violations of international conventions.
According to the Albanian note, the Greek authorities have repeatedly prevented Albanian citizens from travelling through Greek territory even when they were equipped with regular documents issued by the Greek representation.
Tirana's Foreign Ministry also cites cases of the blocking of Albanian diplomats or members of their families, who were asked for unnecessary obstacles when they wanted to pass through Greece in transit. According to the same source, one Albanian woman was also a victim of this attitude and was held at Athens airport for 24 hours even though her health condition was not good.
A few days ago Parliament had withdrawn its approval of President Berisha's decree. According to this latest note, the Greeks are once again turning away crowds of citizens[?] and allowing other Europeans to travel through Albania without the relevant entry visa. In other words, the same as Albanians entering Greece. Before this measure, Albanian diplomats had repeatedly denounced the difficulties their citizens encountered in Greece even when equipped with visas. It seems that after the decree, such incidents resumed again, enough to force Tirana to protest vigorously.
Meanwhile, at the UN Glass Palace, Albanian diplomacy continues to discuss regional difficulties with neighboring countries, including the dispute with Greece.
Its head, Foreign Minister Alfred Serreqi, has so far met with several of his Balkan counterparts. The Albanian official news agency reports the content of these talks. According to this source, the countries that seem closest to the Albanian position are precisely those that have long been confronting conflict with Greece: Macedonia and Turkey. "Greece maintains these positions also with other Balkan countries" — Turkey's Foreign Minister Turgut said at the meeting with Serreqi in New York.
It is with Albania when injustice is done to Albania. It seems that Serreqi's Macedonian counterpart held the same conciliatory stance. "Greece's actions in the region are worsening the situation" — said Janko Crvenkovski — "Greece is quarrelling with all its neighbors, but now the European Union wants United States has a different vision of its affairs".

A smuggler drowns: he was going to his wife
Marine accident
KAVAJE — He was desperate to see his wife — who had been hospitalized for some time in an Italian hospital — but he was found dead at home.
Thus ended in a highly tragic way the journey of the 25-year-old Xhevat Bekteshi from Buka in Kavajë.
The motorboat[?] on which they were travelling — owned by Y.B. and Sh.B. from the village of Synej — capsized after a serious engine failure between Saturday and Sunday not far from Albanian shores. The passengers took the arduous road back. For one of them, fate was merciful.
They managed, after great hardship, to return to the shore and one to the night's ice on their land. For the 25-year-old Bekteshi the adventure was an unbearable trial. His body was found after a few hours and, carried by the currents, it was brought for the last ceremony into the grief-stricken family bay.
Bekteshi's wife had managed to obtain an Italian visa with the intervention of 'Caritas'. Her young husband, apparently worried about her health, had decided to take the dangerous path of a smuggler. Perhaps at the last moment he was thinking precisely of meeting his wife, a meeting that now, unfortunately, will never take place. c.g.t.

Fire in the Rrushkull forests, the army intervenes
Catastrophe averted
DURRES — A huge fire swept through the Rrushkull forest around Durrës on Saturday evening.
It was only the immediate intervention of the army that in time eliminated the damage that could have been colossal.
The alarm was first raised by the fishermen of a naval post, who, being near the fire, had spotted the frightening tongues of flame. Their alarm put the nearby military units on alert. It was precisely the work of the soldiers — for seven hours straight — that limited the spread of the flames. The trenches dug by them saved the pine forest and the rare pheasant reserve located very close by. M. G. T.
Minister Zhulali has been admitted to clinic
TIRANE — Another senior Albanian official — after Deputy Prime Minister Kopliku — has ended up in a hospital bed.
For the past 6 days, Safet Zhulali, Minister of Defense, has been under the strict supervision of the doctors at the government clinic. According to preliminary information, he suffers from pulmonary problems — inherited for a long time — to which a bronchopneumonia has recently been added. His health condition is not critical and appears to be improving. Although not fully recovered, Zhulali — who lives very close to the clinic where he is being treated — has got up from bed and gone out several times for very important work reasons.

Smugglers, the Chinese mafia returns
Arrests in Brindisi
BRINDIZI — The shadow of the Chinese mafia over the trafficking of illegal emigrants.
For the moment it may only be a hypothesis, but soon clear confirmation on this matter may be obtained.
At this moment the Carabinieri of the Provincial Group of Brindisi have come into direct contact only with the tentacles of what is the great octopus of the notorious "Triad", the Chinese mafia known everywhere as bloodthirsty and savage.
The Carabinieri, however, prefer not to speak of the Chinese mafia. But they are convinced they have come into contact with a very large organization, moreover well equipped, which manages the trafficking of smugglers at an international level.
