Bajza station is cleared of the mass of poisoned barrels
190 tons of pesticides evacuated
... of pesticides
KOPLIK — There are no more pesticides at Bajza railway station. For weeks, yesterday a special German team — supported by an Albanian military platoon as well — removed the 190 tons of expired pesticides. The substances have now been packed into 70 containers and are being prepared for transport to the Port of Durrës, from where they will be shipped back to Germany.
The 190 tons of pesticides are part of the tons brought into Albania by the German firm Schmid Cretan of Hanover. And precisely in Bajza — where the largest concentration was also located — the danger from the fumes of these poisons to the environment and to people was established, which also sparked protests from environmentalists at home and abroad. Some time ago, the evacuation of 76 tons of pesticides from all the warehouses in Milot was carried out. Specialists believe that the operation to withdraw all expired pesticides scattered in other areas of the country will be completed by the end of October.
Gjirokastër: fish hunting with chemicals in the Drino River
Danger for buyers
GJIROKASTËR — Beware of poisoned fish. On the airwaves of Radio-Gjirokastra, an alarm issued by the police station of this district has spread. People who want to make illicit profits have carried out “fishing” in the Drino River — near the village of Dervician — using poison instead of hooks. And the amount of poison used has been so large that the fish caught and expected to be sold risks poisoning the buyers as well.
Meanwhile, the order forces have managed to identify one of the fish killers and have announced a search for him.
Fishing with illegal methods has become quite alarming lately. Environmentalists and other organizations have raised the alarm over the risk of wiping out marine fauna, especially that in lakes and reservoirs, through the ruthless use of explosives. Now smugglers have also put the “weapon” of chemicals to use, thus damaging not only the fish stock but also seriously endangering human life.
Tragedy at sea: now 13 victims
The clandestine migrant appeals to Albanians
It is now beyond doubt that the tragedy of 12 October in the Adriatic has caused 13 victims. Although the search has not been stopped, rescuers no longer hope to find anyone alive. At this moment, efforts to identify the bodies are continuing. Although several days have passed since Wednesday of last week, investigators have not managed to establish who the victims of that night of terror were.
LECCE — While new testimonies continue to arrive hour after hour, there is evidence that they are giving new life to a very bleak episode. From Lecce comes a chilling Albanian appeal. I am writing to you, I am one life with you[?] Vlorë. They call me ... I have been here in Italy for two years. I have it with me and in prison. I am saying that the tragedy of these days from which I myself escaped gives breath to us Albanian emigrants, whom the sea is drowning, and that we were 18 people on board. These of our survivors end up in the port, but they should not think that things are better here. Even here your society works like in your homeland and is exploiting you beyond every possibility... I can see with my own eyes and I am also coming to the realization that they want you to be the first to stop this situation. They want to get by with difficulty because, first of all, there is no work, and secondly, if you find a job, you work even more than 12 hours; they do not give you time to go out to eat or wash and change, and much less to send money to your family, which expects some money to eat and perhaps those who have left children and do not, if they were to find some kind of situation to move away from them, unfortunate as they are, and now we are in prison where we will spend our youth there far from my country where I have left my family, I do not have any freedom now from their house — it will be even harder. I have also left Albania and here is where emigration ends up, betraying them for the price and the whole family, therefore, dear Albanians, I give you advice: nothing is all right and do not allow it, and you will not pass as badly as life passes today in prison and do not sell here, or with fish I am with you locked behind iron bars.
Smuggled shoes seized
VLORE — The list of smuggled goods has now been joined by shoes as well. The financial police branch in the district of Vlorë has discovered and then seized 1,250 pairs of high-quality Italian shoes. The owner, Rafael Doka[?], had tried to smuggle these goods in, but they did not make it past the Albanian customs authorities. Recently, other cases of attempted smuggling have also been identified. In just 3 weeks, the seizures carried out by this branch of the financial police in Vlorë have amounted to 30 thousand dollars.
Tractor causes two deaths
Misfortune within the same day
LEZHË — Two tractors were the protagonists of two tragedies caused within one day in Lezhë. A 23-year-old man, D. Gruda, and an elderly 52-year-old man, G. M., lost their lives — in two different places — while traveling precisely on these types of vehicles.
The first victim was Gruda, from the village of Shen-Koll. Seated on the side of the trailer of a tractor, together with a friend, he lost his balance as a result of a sudden jolt of the vehicle and fell onto the asphalt road near the village of Zojmen. A fall that caused his immediate death and the serious injury of his friend.
A fate similar to Gruda’s, but for completely different reasons, befell Mili as well. The latter was driving the tractor himself when he was suddenly struck by a heart attack. Slumping powerless over the wheel, the vehicle changed direction and ended up in a ditch, where it was later found — together with Mili’s lifeless body — by passersby. (dr. Ra.)
Cleric’s attacker arrested
SHKODER — The person who, about 1 and a half years ago, had wounded the Italian priest Luigji Fausto Guballa has been detained. This is the 22-year-old Francesk Preçk Gjeçi from the village of Berçë in the Shkodër district. Gjeçi seriously wounded the Italian priest with a pistol while he was traveling by car to the city of Shkodër. And it was only the medical intervention as well as the transfer to Italy by helicopter in operation “Pëllkan” that made it possible to save the cleric’s life.
New water supply systems for villages
New water supply systems are nearing completion in 7 villages of the Elbasan district. Such as Kryeziarath, Gjergj, Gostimë or Vasjan. 18.6 million lek have been invested in them and construction has been undertaken by the private construction firms “Europrojekt”, “Elion”, “Agrim” and “Shkumlin”. Meanwhile, the management of the electricity-project enterprise states that 72 million lek have also been planned for the construction of 4 new water supply systems in the villages of Librazhd, Dunicë, Vidhas and Shtermen. A tender is expected soon to be held for the competing construction firms that will undertake their construction.
Iraq: embargo continues
YESTERDAY IN THE WORLD
The United States sees no reason to lift or ease the UN sanctions against Iraq: “There is no reason ...”, said US Secretary of State Warren Christopher, “to soften the stance against Saddam Hussein, either because of his conduct or because of the appalling situation.”
Palestine, the head of “Hammas” is found
The body of the thief of Israeli soldier Nachson Wachsman, who was involved in the operation last Friday together with the theft and an Israeli officer, has been found. This concerns Muhammed Diab Ibrahim al-Marzu, an Islamic militant living in a clandestine camp. Meher Kohe Yasser Arafat has ordered the closure of the University of Gaza.
In Mat, loans not repaid
YESTERDAY IN ALBANIA
There are around 50 entities that have not repaid the loans taken from the 3 branches of second-tier banks operating in the Mat district. More than 50 percent of them are borrowers from the National Commercial Bank. For this reason, through the legislation, the enforcement office has taken several punitive measures against debtors who violated the agreement. So far, 12 commercial and municipal service premises, 6 automobiles have been blocked and 4 homes have been seized. But in some cases this decision is impossible because some borrowers have left the country.
