Cholera, death continues
Tirana, the 15th victim
New admissions from Kavaja and the capital
• He was a 75-year-old man. His son is now also in serious condition
• Fear in Student City, but it was only gastroenteritis
TIRANA — A 75-year-old man is the latest victim caused by cholera. F.L., from the village of Vogël in Kavaja, died in the emergency centre of the Infectious Diseases Hospital in Tirana, where he had been taken urgently a few days earlier. His condition from the outset had been very serious and the doctors, who treated him in intensive care the whole time, were unable to save him from death. His son, L. Ta., 30 years old, also with cholera, is now hospitalized in the same hospital.
New admissions continue at the Infectious Diseases Hospital. Since the beginning of the epidemic, around 200 people have been treated in the wards of this hospital. "Every day new patients come here," Dr. Kristi Pano, head of the Infectious Diseases ward, told Gazeta Shqiptare. "All are in better condition than some of the others. Most are from the districts of Kavaja, Laç or Krujë, but there are also people from Tirana and the surrounding villages."
Meanwhile, the alarming rumors about cases of illness from the epidemic and sick people in Student City remain. "Two nights before Pano — it was only cases of gastroenteritis." (Ar. Me)
Money collected for the hospitals
A solidarity contest among traders against the vibrio
TIRANA — The first signs of civic solidarity after the cholera epidemic. Precisely from the authorized Albanian agencies and various international institutions — it is learned after the appearance of the cholera vibrio — the donations are increasing and are being distributed for assistance. Many of their small contributions, due to the epidemic, have been made. The value of the medical supplies donated only by the private pharmacy based in Tirana — "Megachem" — was close to two thousand dollars. Many cases have now been confirmed in which private entities or individuals from Albania have given money or aid. Various private news agencies have now opened relief initiatives against the epidemic for Albanians; humanity has been loudly discussed in Tirana, it has been emphasized, but such aid is beginning to be distributed as free supplies to state clinical hospitals in Librazhd and also to the people of the Institute of Defence. Central Commission: «The law must be applied»
The heads of the local centres are still undecided
Rallies continue, but difficulties remain
TIRANA — The difficulties faced today by the referendum issue in relation to the country have still not been overcome. On Friday the Central Commission distributed a statement in which it explained, in very insistent tones, that it had reminded the chairmen of the district councils that, with the reorganization according to the new territorial division and the latest decision, they must act as quickly as possible. The new document lists the most frequently mentioned districts: Tropoja, Dibra, Lezha, Mirdita, Durrës, Skrapar, Berat, Korça. For those who do not comply. The News and the Referendum and the instructions can be implemented by commissions and the relevant legal sanctions will be applied as far as possible, the statement stressed.
There are still two main problems in organizing the local centres. The heads of the commissions have still not been appointed by the same political force. It is precisely this that the latest act and the other measures of the central commission aim to eliminate.
Those who have emigrated inside and outside the country have continued to face the problem of drawing up accurate voter lists. Anyone currently outside the country will not be registered on the voting lists. Anyone wishing to vote must notify the commission up to one week before, within 48 hours of the referendum being called. For the relief of the burden —
Palace of Congresses
of the bureaucratic obstacles caused by the population’s displacement, the commission proposes registering the displaced in the municipality where they are currently located, and not where they were registered before moving.
The frantic efforts to organize have also been accompanied by a fierce propaganda campaign for and against the Draft Constitution. President Berisha visited Pogradec and Elbasan on Friday. On 6 November we will achieve peace[?], the nationalists said, Berisha said. The opposition has also been active, promoting its ideas on the hottest issue of current politics. In parallel with Berisha, its leaders have moved to other cities in the country.
Meanwhile, the story of the «forged stamp» in Librazhd now appears to have died down. Sources from the central headquarters of the Socialist Party in Tirana confirmed to Gazeta Shqiptare that the activist detained a few days ago — at least he had been released — did not have any forged stamp — these rumors only show the difficulties posed by the referendum. It seems the District Council was left to notify the villages of the country. In fact, the PS activity was not authorized to transport the voting materials. This, apparently, was his mistake, which nearly cost him dearly[?].
Durrës, the ship carrying pesticides leaves the port: the odyssey ends
After three years of waiting
Port of Durrës
DURRËS — At last, the German pesticides are leaving Albania once and for all. Together with the third ship on the horizon — which sailed from the port of Durrës on Thursday morning — the fear and anxiety, doubts and controversies that had accompanied their three-year stay in warehouses and depots across the country, and for years their "mark" that they left behind, are finally disappearing. Two people had brought them from Germany and, for this, just a few days ago, the Tirana अदालत had sentenced them to 9 years.
It took only two days for the Dutch ship "Louis Green", which arrived in Durrës on Monday and entered the port only on Tuesday, to load in its holds 130 containers filled with barrels, cans and poison. It will then stop in Hamburg and the pesticides will be destroyed there, marking the end of the operation launched in Albania in the first days of this September. According to German specialists, the operation will cost a total of nearly 7 million marks.
The pesticides had arrived in Albania at the beginning of 1991 from a private German company. But shortly after their arrival, they were blocked. An intervention by the Committee for Environmental Protection had made it possible to keep the now-expired pesticides in the country until now. From that moment on, their story was reduced to accusations and scandals over the danger they posed. Faxes and phone calls between Bonn and Tirana had become more frequent. Albania demanded the removal of the poisons. And only in July was a way out found: Germany agreed to take them back. Tirana breathes a sigh of relief, and only a few months are enough for it to say freely: Farewell pesticides! (A. M.)
Two young men burn to death inside a car
Accident
SHKODËR — They burned alive inside the car. It happened on Wednesday evening near the inn of Shkodra — the tragic event that shocked the inhabitants of this area. Frok Kola and Shkëlqim Pervizi — both 26 years old from the same village — died in this way, trapped in a ditch, while their vehicle, freshly filled with petrol, exploded immediately. The motives that caused the vehicle to veer off the road of Rrëshen in Bushat and plunge to the end of the lives of the two 26-year-olds are still unknown. (Ar. Ca.)
The book by La Piras is presented
Shkodër
— It was Giovanni Colloni — former deputy secretary of the Italian High Council of Justice — who, among others, presented on Saturday in the main hall of the "Luigj Gurakuqi" University the Albanian version of the work by the well-known scholar Giorgio La Pira: Our Social Vocation. The event was organized by the cultural centre of this university and by the Work of Divine Providence "Madonna del Gruppo". La Pira — former Mayor of Florence and author of many books — is one of the most important scholars of social issues and of organizing them in favor of those who suffer.
Miss '94 is chosen today
Valbona Selimllari, the first Miss Albania
TIRANA — Tonight it will be the end for the Albanian beauty competing in "Miss Albania '94". For the finalists, the 12 girls who have escaped the "trap" of the preliminary selection, today will do everything possible to attract more and more attention, but with the votes of the jury and of the viewers themselves. This time their opinion will also play a major role in the decision for the Albanian beauty of 1994.
Tonight is the last night. Ten places are still far from being able to place the crown on their heads; the others, however, will not leave empty-handed. For a long time the memory of this special event in their lives will accompany them.
Deda’s anger at Fest '94: «Absurd, the song should have won»
TIRANA — "I am the victim of some absurd rules. My song deserved to be the winner!" These are the words of Ferdinant Deda, the well-known Albanian conductor and composer. After the results of the Selection Commission for Fest '94. Precisely after the first Saturday carried out by this Commission, which selected 87 works — Deda, together with other composers of light music of the time, such as Vladimir Koçani or Gazmend Mulla, felt saddened. It was a secret selection and, for the first time, the formula "with the exception of the reactions?" was followed — they preferred that the recorded works be cassette tapes, not accompanied by the names of the authors, but only by numbers. And by selecting. Deda is upset, understandably: the results thus created — participants in '94 would be cooled, would be cooled by the creation — it was really equally difficult, and the composer gets frustrated and is asked to step outside this narrow frame of his, hanging in Greece — he states courageously to Gazeta Shqiptare Deda — this is because the drama of Albanian refugees is still continuing. Frankly, the fact that the song was not positively evaluated hurts us.
Perhaps this time you were simply unprepared?
"Absolutely not. A number of circumstances and tasks came up that I had to deal with."
Can you speak more concretely?
"When Koles Visa[?] had offered me a cap and a few of his verses. For your outfit? I met with Kolosi — for whom the last chairman — they forced me to think that the song should be postponed for the final needs and for technical reasons I could not record it, even though I knew it. These reasons. Perhaps, one day, after the deadline for submitting the songs, but maybe I was forced. I also did it quickly. Some others with late moves still remain to compose it."[?]
"I worked very hard and managed to finish two parts in Albanian in one night and later they wrote to me — but I completed the written composition — yet the song organizers say I submitted it on the 17th and not on the 16th."
So did the jury favor only one song?
"It also depends on absurd rules. Perhaps your song was devalued because you were not a member of the jury? I am just as worried and saddened as the fact itself. It seems that only the technical side decided everything. It is not fair for a song to be judged only by the sound of those poor tapes."
Do you intend a stronger reaction?
"If it will be useful, perhaps yes. But not now. I think the next phase of the Festival should be observed calmly and whether there will be a review of the rules. I have done my work as a composer and have nothing else to add." (C. B.)
