“Anti-genocide”: 34 former officials under accusation
Yesterday the mass denunciation reached the Republic Prosecutor’s Office
TIRANE - The most massive denunciation against former officials of the regime. For the first time since the overthrow of communism in Albania, as many as 34 names accused together end up at the Republic Prosecutor’s Office. Moreover, this time it is not about isolated episodes, but about whole decades, covering the years 1945-1991. It is precisely the National Forum of Albanian Intellectuals for the Denunciation of Genocide, the protagonist of the sensational denunciation that yesterday morning landed at the headquarters of the highest authority of justice in Albania. Meanwhile, the accusation concerns the “unlawful and unconstitutional activity carried out by the communist regime from 1945 to 1991, through decree-laws on internment-expulsion and confiscation of Albanian houses”.

A hell pit is uncovered: 40 killed
The Mniku pit, April 1993
SHKODER - The earth continues to “testify” with shocking evidence from the years of the dictatorship of the past. This time it is the outskirts of Shkoder, the area where another mass grave has been discovered. “40 people may have been buried in a mass pit discovered one kilometre from Shkoder; the first three skeletons have already been taken out of the ground”, the testimony was given by an electronics engineer at the Shkoder Radio Station, Nikolin Noci, witness to the last two burials.
According to the same source, the mass pit is located very far from the city’s residential area, almost one kilometre away. According to the first testimonies, this must have been the preferred place of the dictatorship’s organs for eliminating those sentenced to death. Opponents of the regime, people convicted of ordinary crimes, but also those who tried to escape across the border around Shkoder — all the victims seem to have ended up in this colossal pit.

PAD leader assures the President of peaceful elections
Ceka’s letter to Berisha:
“Set the election date”
TIRANE - “PAD will support President Berisha in ensuring a peaceful climate for the upcoming political elections”. These are the words of a letter from Neritan Ceka sent to President Sali Berisha. Ceka asks the head of state - on behalf of the Chairman of PAD - to set the exact date of the ’96 elections. The request had already been made earlier by the PAD leader at the General Assembly of this party, considering the delay a key decision of the meeting.

The cold takes over Qyteti Studenti
TIRANE - The cold also envelops the smallest town in Albania. The streets are cold, the rooms are cold, the canteen of “Qyteti Studenti” is cold. The heating system, although it exists and is present in every room, does not work. As for water, it seems scarce these days and reaches the third floor with difficulty. In some buildings - for example building 20 - two heaters have been distributed, others will be given later...
The sudden change in the weather has caught the students off guard too. Cold reigns in their buildings; with the exception of the rooms where the heating elements have begun to warm up. At least the only advantage of the regular electricity supply, the students try to use to compensate for the icy radiators that are hardly felt at all. But that alone is not enough.

“Taxes for merchants should be lowered”
TIRANE - “Very soon we will lower taxes for businessmen” is the promise made by the Chairman of the Association of Merchants of Albania, Bajram Sali Tahira. Thus, for several months now, he has asked the government to come to the aid of Albanian merchants, even threatening the Government if it does not give a positive response.

Coca-Cola “spills” into the street
Advertising campaign in the capital
TIRANE - Coca-Cola “spills” into the streets of Tirana. The company’s red vehicles have stopped these days in the streets of the capital, leaving behind what has perhaps never been seen before: a promotional campaign, unknown until yesterday to Albanians, that many immediately think of as a flashy advertisement. Campaigns as television plagiarism. Packs of soft drinks with large bottles have been offered at reduced prices to Albanians, who have become used only to price events at the very end. But the surprise did not stop there. The buyer, who surrounded the car immediately, also took part in a small mini-lottery. The lucky ones instantly won, without a draw, a symbolic prize, to the sound of the Coca-Cola advertising music, sitting inside the car, next to two gadgets with squares.
Thus those who won were “attacked” again by some surprises. If buying at reduced prices was not an acceptable solution, no one said “no” to a “free” drink as a gift. A promotional campaign of this kind has certainly represented one of the trends. If many were drawn in and encouraged to buy several bottles at once, some also left with the mini-lottery’s “red” prizes, with very, very few understanding why the whole “star” was about “Coca-Cola”; the answer, however, was simple: because this is Coca-Cola.

Among the 15 members will be Poland
Albania loses the chance for the Security Council
TIRANE - Albania remains an observer of the UN Interim Security Council. It was the voting mechanism that left Albania in second place, after Poland, for entry into this important body. After the votes in favor of Poland were counted, there were 148 votes, while only 48 were counted for our country.
The Interim Security Council is one of the main bodies of the United Nations. It is made up of 15 members, elected every year, divided by continent. The internal division is between eastern and western countries. On the eastern side, where our country belongs, countries such as Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Romania are also registered. Albania’s hope of becoming a member of this Council had risen greatly because many of the countries that would take part in the vote had promised to support Albania’s candidacy.
