New Year, canteen “revolution” amid fireworks and accidents

This is how 1994 went away and the first days of 1995 arrived... At last the celebration ended. For four days the banks, newspapers, currency exchanges, schools, shops and even the sober ones shut down. Just in Tirana, 12 babies were born in the first hours of ‘95. And three people died on the road. TIRANA — The gunfire and the noise from thousands of fireworks and pistol caps seem to have been the anthem with which Tirana bid farewell to 1994 and welcomed 1995. Even the morning of 1 January found the capital under a thick fog, which had wiped away the traces of pollution from the caps, fireworks and weapons with which the people of Tirana “brought in” the New Year. A car speeding along the boulevard crashed into an electric pole, causing one death and one injury. In another accident, a citizen lost his life on the outskirts of the city. In the early hours of the morning, police and hospitals also recorded injured people from weapons and pyrotechnic devices. Meanwhile, apart from the festive noise, the city also experienced a small “revolution” of the dining table: restaurants, bars and hotels were packed, while family tables were overloaded with meat, drinks and sweets. Supplies were plentiful in markets and shops, although prices in some cases rose immediately before the holiday. In Tirana maternity hospital, during the first hours of the new year, 12 births were recorded. Doctors said that this night, like every change of year, had brought a special workload for emergency services, the police and service units. The city, however, woke up on 2 January tired, empty and under fog, with streets still showing traces of the celebrations, bags, fireworks and the remains of the long night.

Another emergency: the Shkumbini flooded

Another emergency: The Shkumbini flooded Waters attack dozens of houses and fields in dozens of villages ELBASAN — Flooding from the Shkumbini River and its branches has caused damage to homes and farmland in areas near the riverbed. According to initial reports, several villages have been surrounded by water, while traffic on secondary roads has become significantly more difficult. Residents of the low-lying areas said the water level rose within a few hours after the heavy rainfall. In some cases the water entered houses, warehouses and stables, damaging animal feed and household furniture. The cultivated land near the river suffered heavy damage. Local services and emergency units are working to move the most at-risk families and to clear blocked channels. The authorities warned that if the rainfall continues, the situation could worsen further. Residents requested immediate help, especially with food, clothing and temporary shelter for families who have been left without a roof or with heavily damaged homes.
