The National Council of the Democratic Party, meeting in the afternoon at the Palace of Congresses, decided by majority vote not to accept Mr. Selami’s resignation from the post of PD chairman. Selami, who since yesterday afternoon had been meeting with President Berisha, addressed the Council with the proposal that the chairman of the PD and the prime minister be the same person, suggesting the name of Aleksandër Meksi. But the council did not accept this proposal. TIRANË - “It must be said that Mr. Meksi has done wonders, despite the problems the government has had. And if there is one person in this party who would do the job of chairman better, it is Meksi.” This is how the resigned chairman of the Democratic Party, Eduard Selami, spoke yesterday to “GS” at the entrance to the National Council meeting. In an extraordinary meeting in the afternoon hours, the National Council discussed Mr. Selami’s request to resign from the duties of party chairman. In his opening speech, Mr. Selami, after explaining his resignation from the post of chairman, also spoke of a political “reintegration” that, according to him, is necessary. “The Government has lacked coordination with the party. To prevent contradictions between them, the post of party chairman must be merged with that of prime minister,” Selami said. He then added that “Aleksandër Meksi is the most suitable person to carry out both functions.” In the later discussions, many Council members opposed this idea, supporting Selami’s continuation at the head of the party.
