Omonia trial:
from the United States
appeal for Tirana
Greek newspaper: Clinton has written to Berisha...
TIRANA - In the year of the Albanian-Greek court stage, the hearing of the case of the 5 defendants from “Omonia”, accused of hostile activity against Albania, has progressed, and it seems that one of those interested in this process was also the American president Bill Clinton. According to the Greek newspaper “Ta Nea”, the President of the USA had sent a letter to Albanian President Sali Berisha, in which he asked that the defendants be sentenced with fair decisions, “without at all avoiding the democratic process”.
The defendants in the Omonia trial, according to the Greek version, are being held in prison on charges of high treason, while in Athens four Albanian employees are still being held for espionage. “Ta Nea” refers to American diplomat Richard Holbrooke and წერს that Washington has shifted its official interest regarding the Omonia case. According to this newspaper, Clinton wrote in soft but clear tones, emphasizing that the USA expect a fair process from Tirana.
The article in the Greek newspaper stresses that the possibility of American influence in easing the Albanian-Greek climate is great, especially after the deterioration of relations between the two countries. The newspaper notes that the trial against the five activists of the Greek minority has attracted the attention of diplomatic circles and the international press. It is also said that if legal standards are respected, this will help calm the situation.
The article also mentions Athens’ position, according to which the trial is being followed with special attention and any verdict will have an impact on bilateral relations. In the end it underlines that Washington, while maintaining diplomatic caution, is seeking a solution that will not further aggravate the situation in the region.
Market without sugar
supply is lacking
But it seems traders are selling it by the kilo
TIRANA - The Secretary General of the Ministry of Trade, Sipi Hido, said yesterday that there is not a single kilogram of sugar in the state warehouses, while market supply is being provided mainly by private importers. He explained that the shortage in the shops is linked to transport delays and to the انتظار of new quantities expected to arrive in the coming days.
According to him, increased consumption in recent weeks has created temporary difficulties, but there is no reason for panic. “The market will be supplied,” Hido declared, adding that the government is in contact with several companies to secure additional quantities. Meanwhile, citizens complain that the price of sugar has risen and that it is sold with limits or only at certain points.
Some traders, for their part, claim that there is stock, but in small quantities and at higher prices because of transport costs. In some neighborhoods of Tirana, sugar is being sold “by the gram” or with a limited kilogram per family. The authorities say the situation will normalize as soon as the next shipments arrive.
Who is politicizing it?
PS: “Aldo punishment will be had
PSD and PAD”
TIRANA - The Secretary General of the Socialist Party, Servet Pëllumbi, has stated that the latest political positions risk further heating up the climate in the country. Commenting on relations with PSD and PAD, he said that PS will not accept moves that, according to him, distort the opposition or serve unnecessary political scenarios.
Pëllumbi stressed that the socialists want opposition cooperation, but not at the expense of their political identity. In his statement he suggested that there could be “political punishment” for those who move outside previous agreements. The PS reaction comes at a time when relations with PSD and PAD have become more tense.
In political circles this statement was widely commented on, linking it to the latest debates in the opposition. Sources from the parties involved did not give an immediate response, but stressed that dialogue will continue.

A right-wing political pole is born in Albania too
TIRANA - The Albanian political spectrum is undergoing new reconfigurations, while in right-wing circles there is talk of creating a distinct political pole. In the analyses and comments of the day, new movements, rapprochements between groups and distancing from previous positions are mentioned. This picture is seen as a consequence of internal tensions and the need for a clearer political profile.
On the other hand, on the same page a court decision with a sentence of 17 months in prison is also mentioned, although from the photograph the name of the convicted person and the full context are not clear. The visible text does not allow a precise reading of all paragraphs, but it seems to be a political and judicial chronicle of the day.
