TIRANA - 55 gold bars, with a total weight of about 1,600 kilograms, stolen by the Germans in 1944, are being returned to Albania. The announcement was made yesterday by Deputy Prime Minister Bashkim Fino at a press conference, who stated that the Albanian government has brought the issue of the monetary gold stolen by the Nazis during the Second World War to an end. In addition to the decision of the three-party commission, created after the signing of the agreement between Albania, the United States and Great Britain, the Albanian government will also receive 109,000 dollars that were in the compensation fund. Above all, Fino added, 45 years after the blocking of these 1,574 kilograms of gold, a problem that had remained unresolved since 1950 has been settled. The commission’s decision concluded that 35 percent of the amount belongs to Albania, while the rest will be divided among the other claimant countries. According to the Deputy Prime Minister, the return of the gold also has moral and political significance, as it is linked to the recognition of a historical injustice against Albania.
“Consumers, be careful with expired goods”
An appeal from the Association’s chairman
TIRANA - The freedom to trade products has also made the Albanian consumer the “chief buyer” of a wide variety of food goods, mostly imported. According to a recent announcement by the Consumers’ Association, many goods with expired use-by dates or incorrect labels have recently entered our country. The Association calls on citizens to carefully check production and expiry dates, as well as packaging conditions. The chairman of the Association said that state control structures must be more active in order to protect the population’s health. He stressed that public awareness is the best way to avoid abuses in the market.
Trade unions announce a strike battle
TIRANA - “We will demand wage increases, protection of jobs, and respect for collective agreements,” leaders of the independent trade unions declared yesterday. According to them, if their demands are not taken into account by the government, a wave of strikes may break out in the coming weeks in different sectors of the economy. They criticized the delays in privatization and the lack of social dialogue. The union representatives said they are consulting their membership on the forms of protest and that they will also seek institutional mediation.

Beware of expired goods
TIRANA - The freedom to trade products and the wide variety of goods have also brought the risk of expired goods circulating. The Consumers’ Association warns citizens to check product use-by dates and labels, especially for food and medicines. According to specialists, the lack of strict controls creates opportunities for abuses in the market. The relevant authorities are being asked to strengthen inspections and punish violators.
“Here is how we will work”
