The past of senior officials under scrutiny
Stumica and the socialist opposition agree on checking the past of officials
A special body will examine Sigurimi documents on each person’s activities
TIRANA - PD, our opinion was that the files of that parliament should be opened. It has the right to preserve what has been proposed by the pact and to give it the opportunity for them to appear “proletarian”. Now our possibilities are fair. These possibilities will be used against those who accuse us. We now feel calm because what we are doing is not revenge,” says the chairman of the parliamentary group of the democrats. This means that the majority believes that the deputies of the socialist opposition, some of whom may have had ties to the former Sigurimi, should appear before a verification institution. According to the democratic deputy, “we cannot smear the past without facts”.
At a time when the socialist opposition, through a draft submitted to the Assembly, proposes the creation of a special committee with a defined mandate to verify the background of senior officials, the democrats have stated that an independent body should be set up for this purpose. According to them, it will examine the Sigurimi documents for each senior official. Ministers, deputies, heads of administration and candidates for important positions will be scrutinized.
The PD project is being worked on by experts and is expected to be submitted in the coming days. Essentially, it aims to ensure that the past of every senior official does not remain unknown to the public. According to parliamentary sources, the draft is in its final stage and procedural ways of implementing it are being considered.
