The Greek cryptography mystery
The two versions about the diplomat’s wheel
Athens: “It is a nationalist order” - Embassy: “It was a song”
The signal from that phone began, while he was talking with Tirana almost 20 years earlier. The “mystery” was uncovered later. Perhaps the stars of secrecy. Did it have anything to do with an embassy of that country? Only his bag. On Thursday, the signal from the telephone has drawn the attention of the entire public opinion. According to explanations from that time, the telegraphic apparatus used at the embassy had been involved in a transmission that resembled a state of alert. According to Greek officials, this was only a song transmitted on the line. But Albanian authorities have been reserved in giving details.
In the government project at the Ministry of the Interior, another version of the event. In 1974, it is said that a Greek diplomat had put into operation a secret coding device which, according to Albanian specialists, could be used for unusual signaling. Based on the preliminary investigations, it was a device assembled in an office, which sent pulses at fixed intervals. Also mentioned is a special “wheel”, brought from Greece.
This has increased suspicions that it was something more than a musical improvisation. In its response, the Greek side denied any other intention and said that everything had to do with equipment testing. In Tirana, officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not agree to give lengthy comments, but stated that all diplomatic procedures would be respected.
In public opinion, the event is being read as part of the tense Albanian-Greek climate. Various commentators have linked it to disputes over the minority, emigration, and border incidents. However, so far there is no public evidence proving a deliberate hostile activity. The file remains open and the “mystery” continues to fuel debate.

Law enforcement officials say the phenomenon has increased especially in the southern areas and that the current practice has created difficulties in criminal prosecution. The new draft is also expected to include provisions for traffickers in human beings and their accomplices.
Representatives of the ministry did not provide full details on the timetable, but admitted that the initiative is also linked to demands for harmonization with European legislation.
