TIRANË - The first arrest of a journalist in the “ZP case”. Yesterday afternoon, at 5:30 p.m., by order of the Prosecutor’s Office, house arrest was imposed on the former editor-in-chief of the newspaper “Zëri i Popullit”, Behar Merlika. Although the penalty is mild, it was impossible for the news not to make a stir in the public opinion of the capital. The author of the publication of the article of 7 August, titled “Do 2.7 million dollars disappear without an account?”, was considered the person responsible for the news item. The prosecution requested his appearance and in the evening the police executed the decision.
After leaving the premises of the investigation office, Merlika was taken to his home where he will remain under supervision. Sources close to the prosecution said that investigations are continuing to uncover the path of the information and any other possible responsible parties. The case is linked to the publication of material that caused a strong political and institutional reaction.
In an interview published on this page, Xhika states that Doko signed the responsibility, shedding light on the chain of editorial decision-making. His statement is expected to affect the future course of the investigation.
The clash between the media and the institutions, as well as the limits of press freedom, have thus returned to the center of public debate.
