“Another Nachos process”
The Albanian delegation promises at the Council of Europe
From the hall of the Council of Europe
TIRANA - There will be a fierce political debate, with the possibility of a decision being postponed because of lack of time, at today’s meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, in the hall where five years ago Arben Imami triumphed alone. This is the impression with which the team of “Gazeta Shqiptare” is approaching Thursday’s sessions in Strasbourg.
Nano will be the only bluff and also the only one from the opposition who may be able to save face and show up merely to obstruct the procedure, but in any case the government delegation appears determined not to give in on its position. Attention is focused on the speech of the opposition leader, who has warned that he will once again denounce human rights violations and electoral manipulation.
At Nano’s side, the Albanian delegation has prepared a political counteroffensive in calm tones, promising reforms, changes in legislation and improvements in democratic standards. Representatives of the majority maintain that Albania is on the right path and that any delay would be unfair.
Meanwhile, the corridors of Strasbourg are talking about a “Nachos process,” with an open allusion to a symbolic and political trial, more than a technical assessment of the Albanian file. Bilateral meetings continued until late at night, and today it is expected to become clear whether a compromise will be possible.
