Against clandestine migrants, now two armies
Shehu: “We will ask Italy for visa liberalization”
VLORA - At least 1,500 armed and uniformed police and army personnel were mobilized to fight the trafficking of clandestine migrants toward the Italian coast. According to official sources from the Ministry of Public Order, police units arrived in Vlora at the end of the week, while army units arrived yesterday in the coastal city.
For 90 days, joint police-army operations will be in place for the anti-clandestine operation. The police have divided Vlora into six zones, each of which includes 3-4 km of coastline. Under this arrangement, at least two armed police officers have been stationed every 100 meters. Because of the hilly terrain, police dogs are also taking part in the actions. “The clandestines are now finding themselves in front of two armies blocking them,” one of the operation’s leaders in Vlora told “Gazeta Shqiptare” yesterday.
Last evening, there was no movement in the known departure points of the speedboats. Police patrols carefully watched every distant light that might be moving at sea. “Fishing boats, fishing speedboats, merchant vessels, even some private sailing craft are checked in detail. The Italian fleet is continuing to carry out its part of the agreement with rigor,” a police officer said.
Albania is seeking to halt as quickly as possible the mass departure of citizens toward Italy, while on the other hand the issue of visa liberalization for lawful travel has been raised. Public Order Minister Agron Musaraj and Prime Minister Aleksandër Meksi have stated that Italy will be asked to review its visa policy for Albanians.

$1,000 to the survivors of the speedboat tragedy
TIRANA - Had they been alive, the people who lost their lives in the speedboat tragedy would each have benefited from 1,000 dollars, but the government has decided that this amount will be given to the survivors and the families of the victims. The decision was made after numerous public reactions and requests from relatives.
According to official sources, the fund will be distributed immediately once the administrative checks are completed. The aid is considered an initial compensation for the damage caused by the tragedy.
