At last, the more guarded picture from the EUROBAROMETER survey has emerged—the most delicate one, since the country has now effectively entered the election campaign, but perhaps the most important for the parties of Albania’s new democracy, which for the second time are ready to set off in the race that will give the country a new political face

Homesickness: He deserts the army
Deserter soldier arrested
Homesickness: He deserts the army
TIRANA—He had become so homesick that he forgot about the army. “Two weeks’ leave”—that was all his unit commander had granted him, but it had not been enough for the soldier to satisfy his longing for his family. For six months straight, he had been absent from the daily roll call among his fellow soldiers. But two days ago, a military police car had to go to his home in Tirana—not to take him back to his unit to resume carrying his service weapon, but to take him to prison. A. Sadiku—that is the name of the soldier, who was not very fond of the army—was arrested the day before yesterday on charges of desertion.
It has only recently been added to Albanian legislation that soldiers who abandon their military units can be punished, and Sadiku appears to be among the first to “try” this out. Dozens of his fellow soldiers had not liked life in the barracks and had deserted them.
Court proceedings in absentia have now begun against them, and as soon as they return to Albania, they will be sent to prison. But after prison, they will have their hair cut again. They will return to their units to complete their military service.
