Alarm over voter lists

The opposition: “The posting deadline has passed” Yesterday’s meeting of the Commission: “The delay will not affect the outcome of the vote” TIRANA - Alarm in the opposition camp. The voter lists are still not being posted. The concern reached the oval table of the Central Electoral Commission yesterday. In order to have the lists corrected, the “opposition” members of the arbitration commission argued that the delays in posting them were justified. Scheduled to be posted — by law — no later than 30 days before election day, their absence “sparked” the first debate within the central body of the election campaign. Accepted as a contradiction between the law and what is actually happening, commission jurist Arjan Madhi nevertheless said “there is no need to raise the alarm, since in the end the elections will not fail.” “Nothing can be announced before the polling stations are set up,” he explained at the Central Commission. Even for the deadlines that were broken but which “had been”, according to jurist Madhi, there were side reasons that led to such delays. Central Commission On page 3

“Open the internment archives”

“Many of those sentenced were common criminals” Genocide trial, lawyers call for a new panel of experts TIRANA - “Let the archives be opened to see the reasons for the witnesses’ internments.” After the presentation of the parade of witnesses had ended, the defense lawyers spoke before the judges. Yesterday, in turn, the lawyers of the five accused, Haxhi Lleshi, Aranit Çela, Zylftar Ramizi, Rrapi Mino and Manush Myftiu, set out their claims and questions about the indictment. “I ask that a panel of experts be set up to answer our questions. The expert report, on which the prosecution based the indictment, has already been used once by the justice system, in the previous trial against the accused, so we are asking for a new expert report” — this is what Myftiu’s lawyer, Behri, said. The Peshkëpi incident: the accused Greeks escape implication

Prosecutor: “They were trafficking” The Peshkëpi incident: the accused Greeks escape implication TIRANA - More fog over the real perpetrators of the Peshkëpi massacre. The people arrested in Greece, held in prison on charges of last year’s massacre, are now considered to have no connection with the event. The news spread yesterday after claims that the prosecutors in the case had dismissed the arrested men’s involvement in Peshkëpi, revealing that they were merely trafficking weapons with Albanians. An underground tunnel to steal the gold

The alarm camera saves “Felix” They had dug several meters of a gallery to reach the jewelry store TIRANA - An underground tunnel, but to get to the gold. But there a hidden camera sounded the alarm. After that, everything had been written for the thieves; they left empty-handed with only one pair of earrings. The sophisticated theft method was discovered three days ago at the “Felix” jewelry store, on Durrës Street. The glitter of gold had not tempted the thieves to attack the gold shop. And for this they had not chosen to break in with masks, but to carry out an entirely new excavation, added to the arsenal of theft methods. Behind the shop, a few meters away, there was a private house with a courtyard. It was precisely from this courtyard that they had begun digging a tunnel. Like in the movies, with maps and tools, the pair seems to have worked for several days to bore the tunnel that would lead them to the shop filled with gold. The plans and sketches had been completely accurate. After exhausting work, which promised a reward too, they had finally knocked against the floor tiles of the jewelry store. At midnight, out of the darkness, customers with flashlights had arrived in the shop. With a flashlight they had begun to light up their dream. But meanwhile a small camera, which was constantly rotating in a hidden corner, sounded the alarm. The jewelry store owner had once awakened and now had decided to take security with him. After the pair, as if following the alarm, had reached the shop, the police arrived. But in the meantime the thieves had escaped through the tunnel, leaving by the same way they had entered. However, they did not leave empty-handed. They managed to take a pair of earrings, at least enough to remember the exhausting work of digging the tunnel, after which they left before the police arrived. (a.luk/me.k)
