LONDON - Only a few hours remain before EURO ’96 gets underway. Today, at 3 p.m., the opening ceremony will begin at the magnificent Wembley Stadium, the so-called “university of football,” and just one hour later England and Switzerland will take to the field for the opening match. “Crazy,” passionate and violent: this was the first image of the English hooligans, who have been identified by a computer system called Matriks. DURRËS—Locusts are attacking Durrës. The exact number of hectares of land infested by the harmful insect has now been established: a full 7,200. With the arrival of summer, its damage is now being felt almost throughout the country, while measures to combat it have only recently begun.
“In the district of Durrës, 3,800 hectares of land are considered to be heavily infested,” Abdy[l?] Sula, a plant-protection specialist, tells Gazeta Shqiptare—and the density is precisely 10 locusts per square meter. This has mainly been observed on fallow land in the areas of the former Sukth Agricultural Enterprise, Vrini and Borçi. As for the other 3,500 hectares, they can be said to have a moderate infestation.” According to Sula, the first locust larvae were discovered in the fallow fields on April 25. Just recently, the government allocated 8,000 dollars to fight locust larvae, as part of an intensive campaign expected to continue for 12 consecutive months. Yesterday, a further 1,100 dollars were also allocated in the Durrës district, to be spent mainly on the most badly affected areas.
