Europe: “The elections must be held all over again”
Last night in Strasbourg, the resolution of the MEPs
TIRANA - In Europe and in the West, the view of the 26 May and 2 June elections in Albania continues to remain troubling. In a resolution voted on yesterday evening in Strasbourg, the MEPs described the electoral process in our country as unacceptable and called on the Albanian authorities to restore democracy. This appeal, also made by the OSCE, the Council of Europe and even officials from the US State Department, refers to serious violations in the 26 May elections. Yesterday afternoon, the Europe representative of the US State Department, John Kornblum, arrived in our country and stated that the US was reviewing the situation with interest. The OSCE, which cannot send an observer mission to today’s parliamentary session, announced last night that its delegation remains in Tirana to follow developments.
In our editorial office and in the first comments by foreign observers, this resolution by the MEPs constitutes the harshest diplomatic reaction to the Albanian electoral process. (read on page 4)
