Still a mystery: the one-on-one talks with Berisha New structures in the framework of the Albanian administration. Yesterday it was decided what the new face of the Albanian government would be for the coming year. At a roundtable with the parliamentary parties, President Berisha gave the green light to their options regarding the basic structure on which the government cabinet will be formed. The Albanian Socialists were absent from this meeting, even though the invitation had been “sleeping” in the pigeonholes of Pellumbi and Hajdaraga for days. Just moments after the meeting, the head of state expressed his optimism about “the important ideas and constructive proposals that emerged from the meeting.” Shehu, Çodo, Melo and Gjergjo were also satisfied. Although it became known what was discussed during the 90-minute roundtable, what was said in the confidential meetings between Berisha and the party leaders remains a mystery. “Important ideas were discussed,” Berisha was content to say after these meetings. Meanwhile, the politicians preferred not to comment on the one-on-one minutes they spent with the country’s top official. A new body for Albanian emigrants, as well as an institution that will deal with the national question, appear to have been the proposals most debated. Education, social policy and privatization will remain priorities for the next government. A government of professionals, and no longer one of material corruption: this was the shared position of the parties and the head of state. The Presidency On page 3

A married couple were found massacred in their apartment. They had been killed with blunt instruments. The police were alerted by neighbours and had to break down the door to enter the apartment. A month earlier, their son had carried out a similar massacre in a family’s home in Lushnje, killing two people and seriously injuring two others. The police believe revenge was the motive for the crime. Two vans carrying troops were stationed at the cemetery to protect the victims’ funeral from any unforeseen incident. On page 12
