The US proposes: The elections should be held again
Van den Broek in Tirana: “We will inspect the polling stations”
Minister Znillal shows the plans
TIRANA - The coast and yesterday’s guest at the press conference, the American Undersecretary of State for Europe, John Kornblum, and the EU Commissioner Hans van den Broek, gave yesterday in Tirana the most important political statements since the 26 May elections. For the first time, a direct proposal has come from Washington and Brussels: a review of the elections and checks of the polling stations where voting took place. The statements were made during the stay of the Western delegation in Albania and after meetings with representatives of the government and the opposition.
SHEHA - Europe will lead not toward closer ties with the West, but toward isolation, if the Albanian government does not reflect on the electoral process. This is how EU Commissioner Hans van den Broek expressed himself yesterday about the political situation in Albania, at the end of his meetings with political leaders. For the first time, he publicly states that our country needs a new political process. “We want to see concrete steps to improve the situation,” he said. According to diplomatic sources, the EU and U.S. delegations have presented their demands regarding election administration, international monitoring, and the role of opposition parties.
TIRANA - The American Undersecretary of State for European affairs, John Kornblum, said yesterday that the American government is reviewing aid for Albania and will make a decision depending on political developments. Kornblum met with senior Albanian state officials and with representatives of the opposition. He stressed the need for free and fair elections and for the verification of voting in problematic centers. “We are reviewing aid,” the American official is quoted as saying.
TIRANA - Meetings with the defenders of “morality” were held yesterday at the “Tirana” hotel in the capital, where Western diplomatic representatives discussed political developments with the Albanian government. In a statement after the meeting, the EU Commissioner declared that “it is not enough just to talk about improvements, but clear steps must be taken.”
