Socialists: “We will go, but on our terms”
Disagreements in the electoral roundtable, but they presented their own proposal.
Two secret booths and no police in polling centers
A “yes” from the socialists to Berisha’s offer
The political stance is still unclear. They are... we will make the decision today
TRIANA ZEJNO - Until 24 hours ago, the issue of the electoral roundtable and the opposition’s conditions for participation in it had still found no solution. The President of the Republic, Sali Berisha, met yesterday with the chairman of the Socialist Party, Servet Pëllumbi, and only a few hours later also with the head of the PSD, Skënder Gjinushi. The President’s face-to-face meetings with the leaders of the left-wing opposition parties were held at the Presidency. Two hours of talks with the socialist leader and two with the chairman of the PSD were followed by a brief and cautious statement to the press from their side. Both chairmen of the opposition parties said they stand by the demands they had publicly presented for going to the roundtable, but without specifying the nature of these demands. President Berisha simply asked them to make these demands public. The demands in question are made known by the press office of the Presidency. They concern two secret booths in polling centers as well as the non-participation of the police in them. These demands, according to the press office, were presented during the meeting in the President’s office by the chairman of the Socialist Party, Servet Pëllumbi. The second request, which according to the socialists was made more to create a calm psychological atmosphere than for real needs, will in all likelihood be feasible. It appears that yesterday’s meetings between the President and the opposition leaders aimed at obtaining a public and final statement from them on whether or not they will take part in Wednesday’s electoral roundtable. The socialists say they will make the decision today.
