Three days earlier, the two had exchanged punches TIRANA - Azem Hajdari was shot with a pistol inside Parliament. Socialist Mazreku fired four bullets into the body of the Democratic deputy. Tension and anguish lasted for several minutes inside the Assembly hall. The bloodied body of deputy Hajdari was then transported to the Military Hospital. It was 11:54 when, shortly before the session was due to begin, Hajdari was hit by four bullets in the thigh and chest. It was Gafurr Mazreku who, after firing, ran out of Parliament. A few hours later, deputy Hajdari’s health had improved, while Nano asked Foreign Minister Dini to have Hajdari admitted to a hospital in Italy. Dini’s positive response was not long in coming. “I’m sending you the helicopter,” he said. Yesterday’s incident was met with extreme reactions from Albanian political circles. The PD reacted harshly in a statement, and then its leader Berisha himself launched further attacks. “Mazreku is the hand that fired, but those who inspired this assassination attempt are Nano, Dokle and Gjinushi.” This was what Berisha said, later calling for criminal proceedings to be opened against the Speaker of the Albanian Parliament. Meanwhile, another position came from the PS: “We dissociate ourselves from the criminal act committed by deputy Mazreku.” In the Socialists’ view, he no longer deserves to be called a “deputy.” The four bullets fired at Azem Hajdari could mean a death sentence for Gafurr Mazreku. This is the maximum penalty that Albanian justice could impose on him, but even the minimum penalty would send him to prison for life. “Murder on account of the deputy’s special status” is the initial charge listed in the newly opened case against the PS deputy. The Republic’s Chief Prosecutor, Arben Rakipi, told the newspaper yesterday that “Mazreku will be prosecuted under Article 79, paragraph ‘c’ of the Criminal Code.” Yesterday, Rakipi officially asked the Albanian Parliament to lift deputy Gafurr Mazreku’s immunity. “Only then would we be able to order his arrest and begin criminal proceedings,” explained Fatos Dervishi, the second-ranking official in the General Prosecutor’s Office.
